While driving and making a sharp left-hand turn the driver-side support pillar (wide at the base which somewhat narrows up towards the roofline of the cab) can cause a blind spot that hides an object like an on coming car for just a brief split second (depending on driver position & speed) from view. Driving on a narrow street with a sharp left curve an upcoming car or person can be hidden from view.
While turning into an alley at a very slow speed the other day the driver-side pillar hid from view a telephone post for just a second which was long enough for me to scrap the diver-side of the truck. It was daylight, I was not in any hurry and there was no oncoming traffic. As with any tight turn in a truck you have to be careful, but the pillar completely hid from my view the pole to my left. No one was hurt and I was going very slow.
I'm aware of this issue but after years of driving the truck you sometimes let your guard down. It came to my attention a couple of years ago while I was in a left hand turn lane and a car (on the opposite of a side street) just entered the road going the opposite direction as my vehicle. The car was hidden from view by the pillar and as I turned left. It seemed like this car just appeared out of no where as it moved out of being hid by my roof pillar and into my view... nothing happened. I was able to brake but scared the heck out of me.
