2013 GMC Sierra SLE Ext Cab w/ 1785 miles- While at 70 mph, on interstate, in cruise control, heard a click in steering wheel and subsequent steering system locking up forcing me to the side of the roadway. Fortunately I was not injured and vehicle was not damaged. Vehicle was towed to the nearest dealership which was the same dealership I purchased the vehicle from. Service was awful and issue was not duplicated after one short test drive (22 miles) on the interstate according to service department. Service department had the vehicle for three weeks and I was told numerous times that it was available for pickup. I refused to accept the vehicle due to the latent issue. I protested the fact that they were test-driving the vehicle in fear that the same thing would happen again putting someone in a precarious position to react to a possibly catastrophic situation. I told the dealership, to include the service managers and GM, that in my opinion, it was not a good idea to put the vehicle on the road as it would needlessly put the driver at a greater risk of danger. I also told the service department and GM that they assumed responsibility for the vehicle and that I had relinquished any responsibility in the issue.
After several weeks of working with General Motors (GM) case manager, I continued to hold GM accountable for the defective [latent] 2013 GMC Sierra SLE steering concern. I remained firm in that I would not accept the vehicle in the current defective state. I was finally offered a new comparable vehicle which is working okay except for an issue with the defog system.
Initially I was made to feel as though my integrity was being questioned by the dealership: "Did it really happen?" Dealership/Service department really had a difficult time working with me too. However, they were kind enough to give me a loaner vehicle which I really did appreciate. Salesman was very professional and personal. I will never do business with them again though considering the rest of the staff. I also asked the manager of the dealership what their plans were regarding the defective vehicle. He said that the truck would be returned to their current inventory since there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. I was absolutely astonished at this lack of concern for the issue at hand. Worse, he was willing to put another family in this exact vehicle knowing there was a critical issue with this 2013 GMC Sierra – VIN# 1GTR1VE08DZ259329 which was sold in the state of Louisiana. I did tell the dealership manager that this was a huge mistake on his part and that I was going to voice my concerns with GM as well as other consumer advocacy groups. I WILL continue to be proactive in disseminating this important information to the public. As of 6 June 2013, I do not know of any possible recalls for this issue. Through research on the WWW, I did find that there were other similar issues with other GMC Sierra owners
This is my first GMC and I really do like the GMC and was told by many friends that it’s a really great brand/vehicle that will last a long time. I hope that my current 2013 GMS Sierra does give me years of driving satisfaction. However, I feel as though I am always going to think about my steering locking up again. Not sure if I should put the ones I love in this vehicle.
