My speedometer fails intermittently. I was driving to Florida from Virginia and my speedometer failed on interstate 95. I was summarily arrested in summerton, Georgia for speeding. It is dangerous when you don't know your speed.

The speedometer has started acting erratically on my 2005 GMC Sierra with 70,000 miles. It will read 20 to 30 mph less than actual speed. This happens erratically so I have to monitor the tach to make sure I am close to the posted speed, maybe.

My 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 4X4 pickup's speedometer will not go below 45 mph and pegs out at 120 mph. This happened suddenly, it has been this way for over 1 week. I have tried turning on and off, leaving off and restart. Dealership says no recall; not their resposibility.. another shop will charge over $600 to repair in which I do not have. I read on line that there are thousands of GMC's with this issue. Where is help for the consumer"??"

Speedometer default, it will not indicater the correct speed sometimes it will indicate 120 mph, other times it will indicate 20-30 mph, sometimes it sticks on several mph's speeds when the vehicle is stopped. The speedometer is all over the place, when I know for sure I am not going the speed indicated on the speedometer. One time it was indicating 120 mph thru a school zone!!!

The speedometer in my GMC truck keeps on getting stuck. I have been told by many other GMC and Chevrolet owners that have had the same issue that it is in the brain of the vehicle. It happens on the freeway the most. If I don't know how fast I am going I am I am creating potential hazard. If the speed limit is the recommended safe speed. I don't know if I am in compliance. Not only is it a safety issue it is also a financial risk in terms of tickets. All Chevrolet and GMC truck owners I know have had this problem.

Speedometer not working correctly, only have 48,000 mile on vehicle, sometimes it works fine other times it may stick on 50 or 60 or may not work at all. If it sticks on 50 for example when I start my next trip it starts at that point, if I'm going 20 mph it says I'm going 70 mph, ect.

At approximately 66,000 miles on my 2005 GMC Sierra 1500, the speedometer started reading 70 mph while the truck was stopped, and rose from there as it accelerated. The condition persisted for about one week; each time the truck was restarted, the speedometer reset itself to a lower starting speed, until it read zero again when stopped. It is behaving normally now, but this seems to be a recurring issue with this vehicle, and GM has not provided other owners any relief if the vehicle is past its warranty period. Something as basic and necessary to driving safety as speedometer function should, in my opinion, be designed to last the vehicle's entire intended lifespan without systemic failure.

Speedometer has quit working properly. It sometimes reads inaccurately low and sometimes inaccurately high. It will usually go several weeks without ever working properly and then will work for a few days. It sometimes never comes back down after peaking at the maximum speed.

There is a known issue with GMC vehicles where the odometer quits working after 70,000 miles. There is, I believe, a recall on the 2003/2004 model year. I have a 2005 GMC pickup that has the exact same part in it as is also defective. It gives inaccurate readings or pegs at 120 or 0. this is very dangerous. If it wasn't so expensive, I'd fix it myself. But this is a defective part put in the vehicle by GM and should be fixed by GM.

After 70,000 miles the speedometer stopped functioning correctly. It will read 120 going 70 or read 20 going 50. So its reading too high and too low. Also it seems it is starting to have other electrical issues as well.

I have a 2005 GMC Sierra Z71, about two weeks ago I was driving in the country only to glance down and see 95 miles per hour, I braked hard only to realize I wasn't going that fast. After pulling over to the side of the road I noticed my speedometer read 35 at a complete stop. Since then it has worked some days other days it will not read beyond 50 miles per hour or it will be some bizarre reading. I have owned the truck for 3yrs 6 months it has around 31,500 miles under mileage warranty of 36,000 miles but 6 months past the time warranty.

The contact owns a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500. While driving approximately 5 mph, the contact released the accelerator pedal in order for the vehicle to coast. The vehicle then stalled. She shifted the gear from drive into neutral and restarted the vehicle. Later that week, the speedometer displayed 55 mph while the vehicle was in park. While driving to her place of business, the speedometer displayed 100-120 mph. Later that day, the contact drove the vehicle to the dealer and was informed to bring it back for a diagnostic and repair. The manufacturer has not been notified. The current mileage was 72,500 and failure mileage was 72,300. Updated 2/2/09 the consumer stated the speedometer became stuck at 47 mph at startup. The consumer stated he did not know how fast he was driving, since the speedometer was inoperative. Updated 02/04/09.
