The parking brake on my 2000 GMC Sierra will not hold. I have adjusted both the park brake shoes and cable, but it will still not hold the truck. This is the same issue that led to a recall on GMC and Chevrolet pick-ups with manual transmissions, but the trucks equipped with automatic transmissions were not included. However, the park brake must be in working order to pass the nc safety inspection.

Emergency brake failure. The vehicle will not pass state safety inspection due to inoperable emergency brake. GM is aware of the failure but is only fixing vehicles that are equipped with manual transmissions. GM states that vehicles with automatic transmissions do not need an emergency brake. If the vehicles master cylinder fails while driving, this will be the only way to stop the vehicle by applying the emergency brake. The emergency brakes on the manual transmission vehicles and the automatic transmission vehicles are identical, so GM is choosing to selectively fixing a known defect. The GM dealership stated that repairs could run up to $700.
