This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
: the contact stated the vehicle experienced extended stopping distances when the ABS was activated on rough road conditions. The brakes grinded when they were applied on rough roads but worked fine on smooth pavements. There was a NHTSA recall, # 99I006000, regarding the service brakes, hydraulic: Antilock. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN.
While applying the brakes on a dry surface or wet the ABS (anit-lock brakes) locks up and cause the vehicle to travel forward with unsafe stopping distances. T the speed of 5mph. To 10 mph. When the brakes are applied the vehicle is out of control which could causes a fatal accident.
10 days ago my 1995 GMC Jimmy did not stop, it skidded. I have, on many occasions, called GMC regarding the ABS braking system, it did not work all the time and when it didn't it would make a grinding noise and take a longer time to stop. GMC had assured me and my husband that there were no recalls on the system. On July 15 we were traveling on a local road and the car in front of us stopped short. We were going 20-25 mph and hit the brakes, but the brakes again failed, although we had sufficient time to stop, we skidded into the car in front of us and there was property damage and I hurt my neck and back. On the day after the accident we called GMC again regarding the failure of the brakes and were told there was no recall, and they couldn't do anything. Today, July 26, we received a copy of the recall from a friend who owns a auto repair station. GMC was supposed to have contacted people in 1999. We were never contacted. Y husband was a professional truck driver for 30 years and has not had an accident until now. Our insurance rates will go up and this is the fault of GMC.
ABS on 1995 GMC Jimmy fails on un equal road surface coefficients causing ABS sensors to release braking substantially extending stopping distance. Continuous condition since 1996. Latest occurrence on wet road on 2/4/04.
Whenever the ABS are applied, on a wet road, the brakes made a noise, and then grabbed on the left hand side. This caused the vehicle to slide on the wet road. The vehicle was taken several times to an independent mechanic for repairs of the brake bands, but problem was not been resolved. The problem was still not resolved. The consumer requested reimbursement.
When brakes applied they pulsated and rpms rose to 5,000. ABS light stayed on. Intermittently, problem only happened when vehicle had been parked. Dealer was notified. Please provide VIN and mileage of vehicle.
Defective ABS system; when attempting to make a gradual or sudden stop on wet and dry conditions a loud noise comes from underneath the hood. Consumer had dealership on several occasions look for recalls relating to ABS braking system, but has been unable to remedy the problem at this time. Consumer stated there is a bad brake problem.yd
Consumer was doing 40mph in traffic, and another vehicle stopped suddendly. Consumer applied brakes, and there were no brakes. She hit other vehicle from behind. Dealership was aware of prblem.
We purchased this vehicle in December 1996, the egr valve has failed five separate times (was replaced only once under warranty) and we've just recently replaced the transmission. I consider myself fortunate that no one has been hurt when the egr valve fails as we have no warning and lose all brake function.
I have done a lot of research on this problem, and the faulty design of the egr valve system on this motor, leads to senseless frequent need to be removed and cleaned due to carbon chunks causing the valve to stick open (about every 500 miles). When this occurs (without warning)the brake system almost completely fails, (albeit at low speeds), and we have the added danger of having to frequently repair this problem on the side of the road, (amidst traffic), or be subject to monthly towing and repair bills. This is a rediculous problem, and I beleive that a fix for this problem should be devised by GM, and applied to all GM vehicles that have the vortec 4.3 V6 engine, and electronic egr valve.
While traveling in traffic and when depressing brake pedal to floor board vehicle went into extended stopping distance. The consumer had accident as the result of the brake failure.
After ABS brake recall was fixed experienced may problems. Battery and altenator failure within a week and 4-wheel switches do not work, transmission will not shift to overdrive.
