Stated on 7+ hour road trip Fri Dec 13. No warning prior, then attempted to turn at intersection and zero power steering. As engine rpm increased with vehicle accelerating power steering returned. Continued to experience power steering assist at every instance of low speed to point twice of near accidents. Then just as abruptly the symptoms disappeared. Then upon reaching first night’s destination failure at low speed reappeared when trying to pull into parking spot.
Next morning severe vibration felt through steering wheel when attempting low speed turning. At destination took to shop. Was told power steering pump had front seal leak. Estimated cost to repair &1,300. Was told it would take about 7 hours shop time and would require removal of transfer case and catalytic converters to reach pump. Could not get repair done while on trip so taking to local shop now that I’m back at home.
At highway speeds power assist was working but steering had unsteady feel (very subjective description I realize), loose feeling not tight steering that inspired confidence. At 58,000 miles with my first GMC product I am frustrated, and am reminded as to why I abandoned American automobiles. Grateful it was a relatively non critical system, so not left stranded with my wife on side of interstate at night. Car to shop in the morning and letter to CEO of GM vis FedEx tomorrow.
