Traveling 65 MPH in the middle of nowhere and heard a loud bang. There was tremendous smoke from the left rear tire. Axle had been repaired under the 2010 second recall and inspected for the correct install as per the third recall in 2017. Confirmed to be properly installed. Axle broke outside of the recall area near the left spring snubber allowing the outer part of the axle to drop and cause the tire to rub the inside of the body at the tire opening.
Thankfully the brakes worked fully and was able to get vehicle stopped without going over the berm and into a ravine. No injuries. Had it towed to Ford Dealership that was very helpful. Unfortunately Ford was not as helpful, offering no assistance whatsoever either via the recall or via the Regional Representative. No resolution at this time.
