This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The vehicle would rev up when the accelerator is applied and would not shift gears until the odometer and speedometers began to work which take about 5 miles drive.
The gear shift would not come out of park after starting the vehicle. Putting the vehicle in neutral before starting it and shifting it to drive corrected the problem.
Vehicle was experiencing a small transmission leak, consumer was informed that everything was fine, however as consumer had all driven 25 miles the transmission went out.

While driving on highway vehicle jerked and made a really strange noise. Vehicle then died. Vehicle was towed to dealer, and the dealer stated that a metal piece had broken inside of transmission, and transmission would need to be rebuilt. Please provide any further informmation.
While stopped at an intersection, the transmisison shifted into neutral without drivers knowledge, resulting in vehicle rolling backwards when the brake was released, shifting to park then back to drive reengaged the forward gear. Nlm
(forward clutch piston and seal) when you brake to turn left or right or even come to a stop and then step on the gas, all the vehicle does is rev. It's like the transmission is stuck in gear or slipping and then it eventually drops into place. It's a pretty hazardous situation if turning into oncoming traffic. I feel this part should have been on a recall because of what happens when all you are doing is braking or slowing down. Please, please look into this problem. I have two children and would hate for someone to lose a child because of a wreck that could have been prevented by issuing a recall. I bought this van in Feb of 1998 and in a few weeks I noticed that the van would lunge forward at low speeds of about 5 to 10 miles per hour. I went to the dealer and was told there was no problem. I went to another dealer same thing. I returned to the original dealer and this time drove the van with a mechanic and showed him the problem. They ordered a new transmission but the problem has never gone. I wrote Ford but no help. Then I moved to South jersey an dshowed it to the dealer a few times and this past Jan I was told that the problem will stay and nothing more can be done. So at present every time I star the van and accelerate and then leave the peddle the car lunges. In slow traffic this a real anger because it seems as though the car is not in my control. The change in gear is very rough.
