This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Transmission doesn't not engage after you stop and a stop light, when you step on the gas it jurks you forward also doing the same thing in reverse, this seems to be an issue with this modem year and Ford has not done anything about it is any body concerned or does a death have to accur before action will be taken against them.
Our van was in the shop 6 times in 1999. The transmission is not right now and sometimes it will not start at all due to another problem. I hate to put any more money into this van but I will have to I guess. I can't afford to trade it in they don't want to give you anything for it. The transmission is dangerous in that you never know when it won;T go.
I had the head gasket fixed under the Ford recall; one week later the engine threw a rod, and it required a new long block and assorted parts. They had my car for 5 weeks, and never explained wether it was a defective engine or a mhuman failure. It then, one week later, started having transmission problems, with the car slipping out of gear on the freeway at 60mph. I called the dealership, only to be told it wasnt their fault, and the repairs would be at my expense, yet this wasnt happening before they took my car apart. I still have the car, driving it only as absolutle necessary; I cant afford the repairs and dont feel im responsible. This particular model has a terrible track record for defects.
I have heard of many Windstar owners who have also had transmission problems. The mechanic we go to said to expect to replace the transmission - we thought, oh, not our car. $2200 later, we find it may have been a head gasket problem instead.
I understand (through the internet) that Ford is having many problems with its transmissions. Mainly the Windstar, Taurus, Sable, and Continental with the 3.8L engine. My transmission was repaired in 1997 and I would like to be compensated for it!
Transmission replaced first time 12/17/99, failed again on 12/24/99 with 453 miles of use. Both incidents required rental car which Ford will not reimburse. We may not have incurred recordable accidents and injuries but this is a safety issue that demands a recall with similiar terms involve with the failed head gasket in the 3.8L Windstar.
This vehicle is on the 4th engine and the transmission has failed twice at speeds above 50 mph luckily without accident. The brake line that busrt is located directly above the catalytic converter. Having a brake line located directly above the catalytic.
Transmission started slipping day after purchased, new transmission installed 2 weeks later transmission started downshifting while we were driving 65 mph, vehicle downshifted suddenly to 30 mph, problem continued is currently in shop, Firestone says they will have to install another transmission.
Delayed engagement in transmission has been occurring for two years. Crack in forward drum would need to be replaced for $900. Intermittent failures with starter.
The transmission failed at 51K miles. The problem was that the forward clutch pistion cracked becuase it was aluminum and not capable of dealing with the stresses of the transmission. The problem is so bad that atra has a tech bulletin stating to replace the part ( bulletin 267). His problem has been reported by many other Ford owners yet Ford will not do anyhting about it. I am awaiting your response as to what action can be taken against Ford.
The numerous failures on Ford transmissions are because they used aluminum instead of steel in a high pressure area, it will probably take a class action suit just like the head gaskets and the ignitions.
Transmission would not engage when car came to a complete stop.you would press gas and car would get to 1700 RPM then the trans would engage with a bang.Ford had the same problem with this trans on 1994 Taurus amd took care of it.
Automatic transmission failed. Contacted dealer and Ford corporation both refused to admit any problem with the transmission. $1,800 out of pocket cost. 6 months later the head gasket failed. Initialially that cost $1,200 but was reimbursed for the expense when the part was recalled. I believe in doing research that a problem also exists with the transmissions and hope that enough people will complain to iniate a recall.
