Ditschman Ford service dept found timing gear cover gasket was leaking, while van was in shop for head gasket recall. While this problem has a tsb (961714 in your db) dealer refused to fix it unless I paid $1100 for the service. Since the leak was minor and the dealer would not budge on the cost, I declined the service at that time.
Engine gasket blew, and temperature gauge kept running hot. Took vehicle to a mechanic, and they said it was a blown head gasket, there was a recall, consumer never received recall letter.
This vehicle has a salvaged title, and last March Ford sent me the information on the extended warranty for the head gasket problems. They then rescended the extended warranty saying that the vehicle has a salvaged title. Do I have a claim against them? then, just this month I found out that the head now has a crack in it, thus another major repair. I would appreciate any help on this matter. Thanks. Rich rohde.

Head gasket failure resulted in 3 different Ford dealers recommending a complete engine replacement even though the car was driven less than 100 miles after the first symptom. I was never notified of a recall/program to replace the head gasket. Ford was contacted and claims they will not provide financial assistance even though this is a known engine defect.
Ford seems to set limits just inside expected fairlure times... limit is 100000 miles for known head gasket issue. Had some type issue with gray paint peel off on 1990 Bronco... started 2 months after 5 yr warranty ended.
While driving, consumer noticed vehicle was leaking fluid, RPM's started running high and vehicle overheated, consumer turned vehicle off and tried to restart it, but it would not, mechanic stated that the engine blew, after head gaskets were replaced 2 months later, the engine blew, a used engine was installed and 70 miles after driving, it blew.
I had to replace the transmission aproximately November 1999 ($2000), a couple of months later I thought the thermostat needed replaced in the engine but it turned out to be the head gasket problem Ford is having($1200), I contacted Ford and got refused immediately because my van had over 100,000 miles on it. I believe Ford knew of this problem when my van was under the 100,000 mile mark but did not notify the owners of this problem. I have a newspaper clipping stating that Ford is having the head gasket problem and I am looking for reimbursement for this.
Why won't the NHTSA do something about these constant head gasket failures in Ford Windstar" why are consumers left to fend for themselves ? what will it take for the NHTSA to begin action? help us or stop pretending that Ford Windstar owners have some imaginary recourse in these matters" I have experienced a blown transmission at 33,100 miles and now a blown head gasket at 70,800 miles.
While driving about 10 mph front of vehicle started making noise like cranking hard, and engine lost power. Then, consumer took vehicle to dealer where they said that it was a head gasket failure.
