This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The head gasket and timinig cover leaked as stated in the manufacturers warranty, upon removal of the two components the mechanic found that the engine severely sludged and worn, the dip stick and engine coolant tube are corroded, consumer was never notified of the head gasket problems which were the cause of the engine damages. Vehicle was running rough when idling. Dealer replaced headgaskets at 26,041. Then, on 14 Sept 1999, temperature gauge would go up and down. At 37, 543 miles, consumer took vehicle to dealer, and the replaced both head gaskets. Then on 12/10/00 at 43451 miles, took vehicle in for the same problem which occurred twice.
Head gaskets were repaired for free. They wouldn't repair leaking timing chain gasket under the head gasket warranty they should have replaced that at the same time. Many people are having problems with the timing gear cover leaking & lossing coolant
Engine head gaskets blewout and leaked coolant onto engine, causing engine to fail. Dealer has replaced head gaskets under Ford extended warranty ploicy.

Engine started blowing white smoke from underneath the hood and running very rough. Consumer took vehicle to a private mechanic, he diagnosed that head gasket had blownout, and fuel injectors needed to be replaced. Manufacturer was aware of defect in head gasket, but vehicle exceeded the mileage necessary to be included in manufacturer's recall. Please provide any additional information/attachments.
A private mechanic diagnosed that both engine head gaskets have gone out, and were leaking engine coolant. Manufacturer extended warranty to cover this defect to 100,000 miles. However, consumer was never informed about this defect, and was receiving no assistance from the dealership/manufacturer. Please provide any additional information/attachments.
Van has been running hot and ngine check light came came on. They told us at the dealer we needed a new head gasket. Detroit told us it was under the onp but then when we told the dealer that they said we needed a new engine and that wasn't covered. Later that day we found out they made a mistake and weren't covering the head gasket either. Ford needs to do something for the consumer with this big problem. They keep passing the buck when it seems to be their fault. Isn't this typical of Ford with all the other problems they're having that they won't take any blame.
Bolts used in the heads of engine can snap, which can allow water to flow into chamber that holds vehicle. Ford issued a service campaign regarding this defect, and has informed consumer that his vehicle was included in this campaign, however, consumer's vehicle is over 100,000 mile limit, and Ford is refusing to perform service at no charge to consumer. Please provide any additional information/attachments.
Vehicle had been driven home and parked in garage. Started noticing fumes coming inside house. Later went out to start vehicle which failed to start. Had vehicle towed to an independent mechanic who informed consumer that head gasket failed. Problem has happened twice under warranty.
Head gaskets and timing cover failed twice which was covered under warranty, except for the second time manufacturer states timing cover failure was not related to head gasket failure, as well as piston rod failure once.
Re: Ford extended warranty on Ford Windstar 3.8L head gaskets (Ford notice 00M09). My 95 WindstarS head gasket blew and hydro locked my engine at 81,000 miles. The process pumped a lot of coolant through my block and out the exhaust and caused the engine to severely over heat. Sawgrass Ford (sunrise fl (954) 851-9100) has agreed to replace the head gasket under the warranty but wants $1176 to cover the following additional work: Reseal leaking coolant at timing cover $784. Tune-up $110. Thermostat and gasket $85. Flush cooling system $74. Engine power flush $120. I had just flushed and replaced coolant and hoses within the last 10,000 miles. There were no leaks in the engine. (my garage floor is clean!) I believe that had the head gasket not blew, this other work would not be necessary and should be included in the 00M09 extended warranty work. The only reason the cooling system and engine would need flushed at this point is because the cylinders flooded with coolant when the gasket blew. That also fouled the plugs. The overheating damaged the thermostat. The overheating is also the likely cause of damage resulting in coolant leaking from the timing cover. I called Ford customer care and was told the extended warranty only covers the head gasket replacement. The owner is responsible for other repairs. (even if the block froze or the heads warped!) they will not provide me a copy of the 00M09 extended warranty. I will have Ford do the warranty work and take the vehicle to my local repair shop for the additional repair. Any help to have Ford cover this additional damage is appreciated.
Engine starts to charge and white smoke comes out of the tailpipe. Took to dealer, and it was a blown head gasket, and timing cover gasket. Ford denies any responsibilty due to mileage.
