Just was able to get the car into a local mechanic, right now there is no word on the problem. Ford had recalls on this problem but it was before I bought the car in 2017, it shows no recalls on my vin number but I know this is a Ford problem for that year Taurus. The car almost left me stranded in -20F temps. The car got me to my destination but I had to drive more than 200 miles without power steering to get it home.
I purchased this used 2013 Ford Taurus Police Sedan with just over 153K miles on it. I am at 154k and Power Steering Assist Failure warning came on. At first, I was able to shut off vehicle, resetting it, and able to drive. Now, at each time upon start up, the message returns. I maybe drove 30 miles total after the first warning.
The power steering in my car went out while driving on the highway, making for an extremely dangerous situation. Ford has recalled 2013 Ford Tauruses for exactly this reason, but they are telling me my vehicle is not covered in the warranty. It's like they want someone to die first before they do the right thing and cover the cost of fixing the s** they f*d up in the first place.
It seems like this is a common problem with Ford, recall 15S18. Unfortunately, my car has a build date of 06/2012. Therefore it does not fall under the recall 15S18 that has a cutoff date of 02/2012. The steering has completely gone out. I towed the car back to my property and there it sits. I am thankful that I was able to get the car stopped before I wrecked it or someone else. I am thinking seriously about filing a class action suit against Ford. gtl4hire@bellsouth.net if you think you might be interested in joining me in this lawsuit.

check charging system light and loss of electric steering
Event occurs when I first start the car and it's cold out (<30F) and last for a minute or two. If I drive right away the electrical power steering system may not work, sometimes it does work right away and then goes out while driving. I almost hit a parked car because of this. It's in the shop now getting diagnosed, but it definitely isn't the battery (probably the alternator).
We were driving from Houston, TX to Louisiana and it went out on us. Thank God my husband was driving! This is a brand new car and we've had it less time than it's been in the shop. We've been waiting 3 weeks for parts to come in, not enough parts. Very discouraging.
