The first time I damn near lost control of car when it abruptly pulled to the right at 70 mph. Since restarting after recovering, it is just extremely difficult to make sharp turns and get in and out of parking slots. The part alone is over $2,000 at Ford dealer. The problem has not gone away.

Taurus SHO V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 98,000 miles

I have a 2010 Ford Taurus SHO and yesterday my instrument cluster displayed without warning while driving the car said "Service Power Steering" right after the warning came on, I lost all power to my steering. thank God I made it to an auto parts store thinking I could fix this with power steering fluid but found out this car has electronic steering so therefore it doesn't take fluid. I get in my car thinking; my God, I hope make it home. Once I started the car up and went to back out of the store, I couldn't turn my wheels to the left or the right so I knew I wasn't going anywhere.

If Ford can recall all of the 2011-2015 for the same issue, why aren't they recalling the 2010 model. It has the same steering parts at the other years. Maybe they won't recall it because the 2010 model was the first year they re-released them and we who purchased the 2010 were the guinea pigs and it would cost them too much money to fix.

I want Ford to fix my power steering problem. Stand up and be a 'man' so to speak Ford. Take responsibility before someone doesn't get lucky like me and crashes and kills someone.

steering assist failure

In September of 2015 I had to have the entire steering column replaced due to epas failure which had a recall for the vehicle in 2011 and up. Since my SHO is 2010 I paid almost $2500 for the fix. Now less than two years later again having issues with epas and there is still no recall for 2010 and am afraid that I will be hit with another $2500 bill for something that is clearly an issue. Since the 2010 SHO is the only model that has this system it will probably never be on the recall list eventhough it is completely the same as the 2011 up system.

This is the infamous Electronic Power Assist System (EPAS) on many recent Fords that are failing left and right. The system replacement part was about $1,300 (the whole thing new, as it can not be repaired) + $700 labor = a $2,000+ repair. Ford has decided to recall some vehicles (2011 and newer) but others not (2010 or earlier), leaving owners like myself stranded, as these EPAS usually fail after the warranty expires. I own a 2010 Ford Fiesta as well, same EPAS system, same issue as the Ford Taurus, failing within six months of each other. On these particular 2010 and earlier systems, which appear to be an earlier generation, when the EPAS fails, steering becomes hard as a rock, you simply can not drive the car. This is very concerning if it happens while driving.

Unfortunately, Ford has been hiding, and even they have been investigated, they claim that even when the EPAS fails, you still should be able to steer your car and be able to drive it with just a little more effort.

This is half true. That is the case with the 2011 and newer EPAS systems, which you can see demonstrated here: https://youtu.be/Su5Fd_w5HXM?t=1m53s

But for 2010 and earlier, that is not the case, as this fellow demonstrate and explains: https://youtu.be/szHMXwcp9fo

So, this issue is really affecting pre 2010 owners, which appear to have a 1st gen EPAS I guess, since the two behave differently when they fail.

Ford should be investigated as to why they recalled 2011 and newer but did not recall 2010 and earlier. The two systems are different, and the 2010 is a more concerning issue, as it involves a total steering loss of the car.
