Brake pads for the rear seem to be unusual to go first. Front brakes still have most of the pads left. Replacing the rotors is particularly annoying as they are "too thin" to machine, according to the service rep. I'm going to write Ford and complain that it's ridiculous to have to replace the rotors at 63,000 km (37,000). I'm NOT hard on brakes and a lot of the mileage is highway driving to/from Canada/Florida. If Ford doesn't give me satisfaction, it will be the last Ford I buy. I have a 2006 Hyundai Sonata with similar mileage and have NO problems at all!

Taurus 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 33,133 miles

I drove 3 Crown Vics to about 100,000 miles each over a 10 year period with no brake failure. The 2008 Tarus brakes failed at 33,000 miles and there was no warranty coverage.

Taurus Limited Awd 3.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 32,900 miles

Rear brakes - pads and rotors - wore out and replaced at 32,900 miles (mostly open road and freeway driving). Not covered by warranty - I had to pay $412.00 for the repair. Original front brakes are like new (6mm of lining). New rear brake pads have 7mm of lining. Dealer service manager said Ford brakes wear out between 30,000 and 40,000 miles. Service manager could not explain why the front brakes show only 1mm of wear, assuming 7mm is the thickness of a new pad lining. Called the Ford Customer Care Center - my question to the representative - are the 2008 Taurus rear brakes designed to wear out in less than 40,000 miles. Call Center Rep told me to ask the dealer. I asked the Call Center Rep if the dealer has access to the 2008 Taurus brake durability design goals. Silence. Since. Call Center Rep final comment - ask the dealer. I sent a letter to Alan R. Mulally asking 2 questions relative braking safety and durability.
