CarComplaints.com Notes: Most people need a car that shifts gears & coil springs that don't shred tires. The Taurus fails in that respect.

The 2003 Ford Taurus has major issues with the transmission failing. Typically the 2003 Taurus transmission failure costs $2,000 to fix by about 90k-100k miles. Not good.

Adding insult to injury, the 1999-2003 Taurus also has a huge problem with coil springs breaking which can puncture or even shred tires while driving.

The US government spent THREE YEARS (2008-2011) investigating the 2002-2003 Taurus coil springs. Although Taurus/Sable from earlier years were recalled, ultimately the NHTSA did not force a recall. They determined that because there had been no deaths & very few bad crashes & injuries, the broken coil springs defect was no big deal & not a safety defect. Tell that to all the owners who had close calls...

I've had problems since I've bought it and the dealer shouldn't have sold us the car if it was a bad year. I've gotten the run around when I called Ford n 2003 and had a warranty until 36000 miles. It's 2014 and it only has 77000miles. 1st, the gasket, then found out had more done to it. Then replaced ignition switch 3xs, power pedals, air compressor, 2013 transmission rebuilt 2014, now alternator . I have all my receipts since day I bought car. I want every one to know I was sold a lemon and I will never buy another Ford ever. I want to know why Jim ONeal sold me a lemon .

We were driving home from a campus ministry late one night, hurrying to get home because we had to be up by 5:30 the next morning. My car started fine, but as soon as I pulled out of the parking lot onto a main road, my pedal didn't work. I've had this happen before, so I pulled over and restarted the car. But as I'd try to shift gears, nothing would work. We didnt think it wasn't a complete transmission, since there was no signs of it slipping or clancking of gears. Good thing my boyfriend was with me, he is really good at cars, although he didn't know what happened. Everything in the car was working, radio, heat, lights, etc. There happened to be a campus parking ramp right there. So we got a couple of guys to push it into the ramp. My dad picked us up that night, and we towed it ourselves 5am the next morning. After taking it to a transmission expert shop, he told us Taurus's are known for having weak torque converters, and he did over 4 this month. It was a great inconvenience for the time it happened, and I understand things happen. Not a problem. But the price was the problem. It was a lot of money, but I couldn't put it off since there was no way I could possibly drive the car. Just a shame that there is no recall after all these complaints...

Getting in my car to leave work, planning on going home and having a friend from college over to have dinner with my wife and I, haven't seen them in forever. So i go to shift into reverse to back out of the space and the car gives a little jerk, and then will not budge an inch. I shift into reverse, forward, neutral, and get NO response from the car. The engine is still running, everything inside the car still works, but the car will not move at all. Called a mechanic to come look at it and they took about six seconds to determine it was a transmission problem. Now waiting for my wife to make the 45 minute drive with our 4 month son in tow to pick me up. I am so f*cking angy i told her she should just leave me here... Anybody know if there are any situations where this can happen to your car and its not a "f*ck me this is going to be expensive" kind of repair?????

THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT SHIFT OUT OF 1st GEAR UNLESS I JUST TAPPED THE GAS OR LET OFF COMPLETELY. TO MERGE ON TO A FREEWAY WAS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE I COULD NOT ACCELERATE FAST ENOUGH!! I TOOK THE CAR TO THE FORD DEALER 3 TIMES & THEY WERE ABOUT WORTHLESS!! THEY TOLD ME TO DRIVE THE CAR TIL THE TRANSMISSION DIES & THEN FOR ABOUT $3,500 INCLUDING THEIR 12 HOURS LABOR @ $88 PER HOUR TO REMOVE & REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION THEY WOULD REPLACE IT WITH ANOTHER FORD QUALITY REBUILT TRANSMISSION!! I SCRAPPED THE FORD DEALER & WENT TO A VERY REPUTABLE LOCAL TRANSMISSION SHOP & THEY REBUILT THE TRANSMISSION & REPLACED THE CRACKED CLUTCH DRUM & MANY OTHER PARTS WITH GOOD NON FORD AFTERMARKET PARTS & ONLY TOOK 4 HOURS TO REMOVE & REINSTALL THE REBUILT TRANSMISSION @ $66 LABOR!! MY TOTAL BILL WAS $1,275 & THE REBUILT TRANSMISSION SHIFTS BETTER THAN IT DID WHEN IT WAS NEW!! I WAS NEVER A FORD FAN & THE ONLY REASON I DRIVE THIS FORD IS BECAUSE I INHERITED IT!! I'LL STICK TO MY JAPANESE CAR & FORD CAN !!!!!???**????!!!

Well guess this is starting to look like the script from the movie Groundhog Day.Was running errands last night in the cold and snow when while driving along car was fine and then acted like it had slipped into neutral. Was lucky enough to have enough momentum to coast onto a used car lot (how ironic) shifted through all drive gears and could not feel tranny go into gear.Made some phone calls and had car towed to garage, will know Monday the diagnosis but after reading these complaints not looking good. Was hoping and still am to a point to get but with either a bad CV joint or Half shaft, but then again this did happen on FRIDAY THE 13TH.Will defiantly be keeping receipts with hope of recouping my money eventually.

I HAVE CALLED FORD TODAY AND ALL THEY SAY IS WE ARE SORRY ABOUT BUT THERE IS NOT ANY RECALLS OR TSB'S. THEY SAY THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. THAT'S BULL, SOME OF THE OWNERS HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN TO THEM WHILE THEY WERE DRIVING ON THE MAIN INTERSTATE AND AFTER THEY LOOSE ANY WAY TO DRIVE THE CAR OFF TO THE SIDE WITH CARS PASSING THEM ON BOTH SIDES. BUT THAT'S NOT UNSAFE!! I WOULD THINK THAT THERE IS SOMETHING TO MAKE THEM FIX OUR VEHICLES AND REIMBURSING THE OWNERS THAT HAVE ALREADY PAID TO FIX IT. MY WIFE AND I ONLY WANT OUR CAR FIXED SO WE HAVE TRANSPORTATION.

This site says it all!! After paying 2300.00 for other stuff that the car needed ( all that are mentioned on this site by the way). I joined the "replace torque converter club "AS WELL! The mechanic said there were also metal shavings in the trans pan and told us the tranny could last 6mths or 6 years. These 2003 taurus are horrible after 80,000 mls. At this point I'm not sure I want to keep the car. I've been exploring the kia and hyundai cars with the 100,000/10 year warranty! I've never even driven a foreign car, always fords but I'm sick of this. Part of the $2300 we spent were for rear coil springs which did not fix the problem, also needed rear struts, the dealership could have fixed that at the same time with a "quick strut kit". This is just another way of my bringing the car back so they could charge me more labor. FORDS SUCK!

This Taurus has drained me financially. Thank God I am still alive. Pulled out onto the highway and transmission failed without warning. Thank goodness my brother and I were able to get this thing pushed to the side without getting hit during rush hour. I still have car payments on this 89,000 mile car and now a $1800 transmission repair bill that will take me even longer to repay. Ford you owe us a recall, how can you put our lives on the line for your almighty dollar?

My wife and I drove our freind's house, and when we where ready to go home the car started making a strange sound. When I shift into any gears it act as if it was in nuetral. Had to leave the car at our friend place and get a ride home. It will cost me at least $ 2,000 just to get a new transmission without the labor cost. I have 1 more year to pay for this thing. Auto machanics will always have a job when the ford taurus is out on the road.

Taurus SES V6

  • Automatic transmission

In 2005, I was driving an old 1988 Honda Accord LXI which had some minor problems and very little power. I was okay with that knowing that I could not afford a new car, especially after checking around and finding out my credit was (good) not great. I happened upon a small car lot and looked at a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant, even test drove it. After giving the dealer(for financing purposes) my whole life story, he called me and explained that the bank would not finance that particular car for me. However, he had a 2003 Ford Taurus SES with 68,000 miles that they would finance. I went and test drove the car, it ran well and let my dad look at it at his shop. I bought the car, I have replaced only the starter. Well, three weeks ago as I was backing into my driveway it would no longer move. I put the car in drive and it still would not move. I knew then it was my transmission and I have had several people to tell me the same thing. Am I going to replace it this close to Christmas? HELL NO! A friend gave me a 1986 Pontiac Sunbird that I will putt-putt around in. Ford knew about this problem and my husband had a 1996 Ford that did the same thing. Eight months later, it went out again.
