CarComplaints.com Notes: Most people need a car where the coil springs don't puncture or shred tires while driving. The Taurus fails in that respect.
The 1999-2003 Ford Taurus has a huge problem with coil springs breaking, which can puncture or even shred tires while driving.
The US government spent THREE YEARS (2008-2011) investigating the 2002-2003 Taurus coil springs. Although Taurus/Sable from earlier years were recalled, ultimately the NHTSA did not force a recall. They determined that because there had been no deaths & very few bad crashes & injuries, the broken coil springs defect was no big deal & not a safety defect. Tell that to all the owners who had close calls...

I have a 2002 Ford Taurus SES model, When I first got the car in October 2004, I noticed a loud whining noise coming from the front end. I had a friend take a look at it and he told me it was the powerpak to the power steering, it was going out. I took the car back to the dealer and told them problem. In addition to the diagnosis from the friend, they found a leak in a hose, they fixed it but not the power pak, before I took the car home, I demanded they fixed the power pak. They fixed no problem until about a month ago, the noise is back! my car is no longer under warranty at this point, so I took it to Midas and they told me no leaks everything looked good. but just to turn my radio up and just ignore the noise.... That's impossible to do!!!. So what do I do now. I need this noise fixed before I pull out all my hair... Oh by the way, I have changed my power steering fluid, still nothing.....I need someone's advice, help,anything. Ford should should know about this problem and declare a recall for this alone, or could this be the reason why they discontinued the model all together.. all in all, its a good family vehicle.;
