CarComplaints.com Notes: Most people need a car where the coil springs don't puncture or shred tires while driving. The Taurus fails in that respect.

The 1999-2003 Ford Taurus has a huge problem with coil springs breaking, which can puncture or even shred tires while driving.

The US government spent THREE YEARS (2008-2011) investigating the 2002-2003 Taurus coil springs. Although Taurus/Sable from earlier years were recalled, ultimately the NHTSA did not force a recall. They determined that because there had been no deaths & very few bad crashes & injuries, the broken coil springs defect was no big deal & not a safety defect. Tell that to all the owners who had close calls...

Taurus SES 3.0L V6 Flex Fuel

Since I bought this car (04/05/03), I have discussed poor fuel mileage with many service managers and mechanics at dealerships and other repair facilities. Have not seen any improvement in 81/2 years. My fuel mileage is 21-23 in the summer and 18-20 in the winter. I traded a 1993 Taurus with the same engine for this 2002 Taurus and I am very disappointed. 1993 Taurus got 24-26 around town and 31-33 mpg on trips. Quite a difference. On 2002 Taurus, the A/C compressor runs even when the heater controls are turned off. I've discussed this with service managers with no results. This car has cost me more money and inconvenience in 46000 miles of ownership than my 1993 Taurus did in 193000 miles. I wouldn't call that an improvement from 1993 to 2002.
