CarComplaints.com Notes: Most people need a car where the coil springs don't puncture or shred tires while driving. The Taurus fails in that respect.
The 1999-2003 Ford Taurus has a huge problem with coil springs breaking, which can puncture or even shred tires while driving.
The US government spent THREE YEARS (2008-2011) investigating the 2002-2003 Taurus coil springs. Although Taurus/Sable from earlier years were recalled, ultimately the NHTSA did not force a recall. They determined that because there had been no deaths & very few bad crashes & injuries, the broken coil springs defect was no big deal & not a safety defect. Tell that to all the owners who had close calls...

The contact owns a 2002 Ford Taurus. While driving 5 mph, the contact heard a loud noise and the vehicle stopped. The road conditions were normal. The vehicle was towed to the repair shop and the mechanic stated that the passenger side front coil spring failed. The coil spring punctured the tire. The current and failure mileages were 60,000. Updated 12/27/07 the dealer stated also repaired the ab sensor assembly. Updated 12/12/07
2002 Ford Taurus. Loss of brakes due to malfunction in ABS system. Removed fuse to the ABS system and the brakes returned. Daughter was on way home from work and went through a red traffic light because there was no brakes at all. Good thing late at night and no one to be hit. Ford continues to say not a recall problem.
The contact stated the brakes have not operated properly since purchase. The vehicle will not slow down when the brake pedal is depressed. She must pump the pedal repeatedly, but this does not always work. The rotors and pads have been replaced by the dealership. The dealership was unable to diagnose the cause of the problem. The vehicle has been to an independent repair shop, and they too were unable to diagnose the cause of the problem. Also, the contact detected fumes coming from the engine. The vehicle was taken to the same repair shop, and they determined the radiator overflow tank had a crack on the bottom. No repairs have been made.
I was driving on a 65 mph highway at posted speed. I exited onto a ramp, and applied the brakes. The pedal went to the floor with no braking. The automobile had only 12,000 miles.
My daughter was pulling into a parking space, she applied the brakes, the car lunged ahead and hit the building. The passenger air bag deployed and not the drivers air bag. She had her seat belt on and hit the steering wheel. I talked to Ford and they siad to go through my insurance company.
