This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
Daughter was driving down the highway and it was as if it went into neutral. No forward or reverse gears. There was no indication of anything about to happen transmission was not slipping or acting up prior to this. Just glad there was not heavy traffic as this could have been a bad scenario. After research have found this is a very common occurrence on this vehicle. Wondering why Ford has not down something about it. Bought a Ford Taurus because we thought it would be a very safe car for a young driver.
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that the accelerator failed to respond to acceleration attempts intermittently. The contact also mentioned that the transmission was replaced and failed. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic. The mechanic stated that a new transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not further repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 40,000. The current mileage was 70,000.
Since 2004, I had to have my engine rebuilt in 2009 the cost was 1,700, due to failure in the coolant system"probable cause was the coolant system eroded', and still have coolant issues, the repairs on the coolant was almost 700. After those repairs were conducted, I had my car towed to grand prairie Ford, because my car would not change gears. Grand prairie Ford presented me a repair list stating at that point my car needed a new transmission and would cost another 3,000 to repair. I had my car towed to Eagle transmission in irving, Texas. The manager told me nothing was wrong with the transmission and in fact it was an electrical error and that the brain would have to be recalibrated. I had the car towed back to grand prairie Ford to have the brain recalibrated. The car at that point drove off their lot just fine. Grand prairie Ford would not give me an answer on why they tried to tell me that I needed parts when in fact nothing was wrong with them. They did state they replaced the seat belts due to the recall. My driver seat belt disengages still while driving. I have to replace the tires several times a year due to suspension issues'ball joints, tire rods, struts, shocks', even after repairs were conducted it has been a continuing issue now costing several thousands. I have not been able to have this car inspected in 2 years due to emission control. I have replaced all of the defective parts and still the car will not pass. Also this car was a split year model and has been a nightmare when replacing any parts. I do have every receipt for all repairs and parts that have been bought for this car and the falsified statement from grand prairie Ford and a letter from Eagle transmission to prove this statement that I have made today is true. However, I still have a car that I can not drive because it would be illegal and Ford Motor Co. Does not honor their vehicle.
Ran two errands. Got back in car, started up, put in gear and nothing. Made whirring noise, but wouldn't go into gear. Could not back up, go forward, nothing.
For no apparent reason, the car was driving fine one moment and then there was no drive in any gear. Total cost for towing and repair was $3086. Transmission shop said reason for failure was failed torque converter. Transmission was rebuilt due to overheating. Transmission cooler was full of torque converter clutch material. I have found 113 incidents of dangerous torque converter failure related complaints in this national highway transportation safety administration (nhsta) database from 1994 through 2005. For a complete discussion see www.taurusclub.com/forum/82-maintenance-repair/168651-2000-Taurus-wont-shift-into-any-gear.html. these torque converter failures and their related torque converter pump shaft failures create extreme financial hardship on the Taurus owners. Additionally the failures occur without any warning whatsoever and thus present a hidden danger to all persons inside the vehicle and other drivers on the road. Based on information found in the daaco transmission parts catelog (daacoinc.com), Ford torque converters from the 4F50N, axod, axode, and ax4S transmissions seem to be of similar design. NHTSA campaign id number 12V006000 has already forced a recall for the torque converter used in the 4F50N transmission. See www-ODI.NHTSA.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallresults.cfm"start=1&searchtype=quicksearch&rcl_id=12V006000&summary=true&prod_id=203181&printversion=yes why is nothing being done about this"
I stopped at a red light and started to go when the light turned green and half way through the light the trains slipped out of gear and wouldn't engage until the RPM went down. This is only one of many times this has happened and after doing some research I'm not the only one. I hope Ford does the right thing and recalls this problem before somebody gets killed and a recall would be nothing compared to a death and a lawsuit.
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Taurus. The contact was driving 30 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact restarted the vehicle and none of the gears were functioning. The contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 170,000.
Driving at 65mph with the cruise on. The RPM's goes to 6000 with no warning and no lights on the dash. I turn the cruise off and the RPM's drop. I now start to accelerate and the RPM's just go up and the car doesn't move forward. I just get the car off the roadway before I am rearended thank god. Once on the shoulder of the roadway I try all gears with nothing but high RPM's. I sit on the side of the roadway for 1 hour with 18 wheelers going by just inches from me until a tow truck arrives. I did a search on google about this vehicle and there are many let me repeat many folks that have had the same problem. This vehicle only has 47,000 miles and is very well maintained.
I have own a 2000 Ford Taurus SE in which the transmission failed. My son was returning home from school when the vehicle decelerated then stopped. The vehicle's engine runs fine but it won't move forward or reverse when placed into gear. Conversing with others I've discovered that this isn't an isolated incident. It appears to be a major problem that's being overlooked by Ford. This situation is placing customers in dangerous situation, and my family was fortunate that this didn't occur on a highway or proceeding through an intersection.
Second request for reimbursement for safety recall repairs involving 2000 Taurus. The gear would not move out of park, the consumer had to put a high effort into taking the vehicle out of reverse. There was a concern with the brake light switch. The consumer requested reimbursement for repairs.
Problems with brake lamp switch went out on 2000 Ford Taurus. The brake light had gone out which was a recall item. The brake lamp switch had gone out again and the consumer discovered the vehicle would not go out of park into drive but was finally able to get it into neutral and then into drive (G2). The consumer was unaware the brake light was out, which was the third brake light switch in less than three years. The consumer requested a refund. There was noise which had come from the blower motor, and the fuel gauge acted erratic and the fuel pump was replaced.
The transmission was replaced 3 times. The last time the transmission light illuminated, the dealer stated there was an internal problem with the over drive.
