This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The speedometer squeals and the needle begins bouncing and registering the incorrect speed when traveling at 50 mph or more. This is the second speedometer head on this car as the original also failed with the same complaint. The original was replaced under warranty but Ford dealer says that the replacement is not covered under warranty. I have seen dozens of complaints for the identical part failure and at least service bulletins listed in your databases. I feel that this item presents a significant safety hazard and do not know what other components are being affected by the behavior of the speedo. Can you provide any guidance in getting relief from the manufacturer? I do not see why I and others affected should have to pay to replace an obviously defective part that Ford knows about and still installs as a replacement part.
Speedometer has been replaced once at 35000 miles failed again at 56000 miles. There are currently 94 other records of speedometer failures on line. This represents a clear and present danger due to lack of knowledge by the operator of his speed which may result in a serious accident. Please advise as to any further action which should be taken to have Ford Motor Company recall this speedometer and replace it with one which will work properly. This should be done at no expense to the customer. I have already asked Ford Motor Company to replace this speedometer due to multiple failures, but they refused in a letter dated 07/09/1999. Thank you for your help in correcting this important safety matter.
This is the second failure of a speedometer in this vehicle. The first failed at approximately 32000 miles, and was replaced under the manufacturer's warranty. The second failed at approx. 65000 miles, and was not covered under my extended 75000 mile warranty, the replacement parts warranty, or by the dealer or manufacturer. Other 1995 Taurus owners I have spoken to have experienced the same problem. This is obviously a poorly engineered and/or manufactured part and they should be replaced by the manufacturer.
The VIN numbers on my car and paper work are different. We get paper work from U all for the VIN# on our paper work which not is the same as our car. Our motor mounts are coming looseas due to the bolts and things, I do not think that it is from ware and tear. Maybe someone can let me know some thing about this problem... my VIN number on my car is :[xxx] and the paper work for my car is : [xxx] this one is the one we get that you all say needs fixed. Our phone number is [xxx].our zip code is [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The service manager at ace stated" Ford is aware that the part is defective they are having a problem with the vendor that supplys them with the part " Ford and the dealership refused to replace the part because the car has been driven over 12,000 miles since the part was replaced however the part had only been in the car for 3mos. And had less than 3,000 miles when the problem was reported.
I have two 1995 Taurus sedans. Both have the same problem and both have had the speedometer assemblies replaced previously. This is the second failure on each car. The speedometer needle jumps 15 to 20 mph when traveling at highway speeds.
