This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
This past Sunday, on June 11, 2017 I was driving home from a graduation party and there was a loud "pow" once I accelerated from a stop. My steering was very stiff (as if I was driving an ancient large truck with no power steering, also my exhaust system at least partially came undun. I was able to get the crippled car to our regular repair shop, who told me that I had a subframe rust-collapse. I had talked to a shadetree mechanic friend, who said that it wasn't an actual subframe collapse, but the next layer up, the engine cradle whose sleeves are no thicker steel than the unibody sheetmetal. One of the sleeves rusted through. Supposedly the engine cradle sleeves are removable/or the cradle itself. My mechanic friend and the tow fellow that brought my car back to my home, both said that what happened is quite rare, they never heard of such an incident. The cradle rust through caused my front subframe to partially collapse and the engine is tilted down on the right-front. This disconnected the exhaust and bound-up my rack-and-pinion steering, rendering the car unsafe to drive. This car is not a rust-bucket, no rusty body panel holes, and everything else still works! just the paint and clearcoat are flaking-off. I have looked on the internet and searched local salvage yards, but cannot find a good engine cradle/sleeves. Yet, there are scads of good Taurus engines cheaply available. Why didn't Ford offer replacement engine cradle/sleeves" was there no recall" I'd bet I'm not the only person this happened to!! I would like to get this car fixed! I have photos of the subframe fallen after the engine cradle failure. Please send me an E-mail address I can upload them to. I lose this page if I try to upload here (4th time!)
1. the engine problem was a blown head gasket 2. the transmission problem was a planetary gear meltdown. I replaced the planetary gearset and the fiber parts, plates and seals. I also installed an axod dam kit made by shift technology products to increase the lubrication to the planetaries. Unfortunately, the transmission still has the same delayed shifts from second to third and third to fourth and a delayed and harsh third to second downshift that it always had (it was my wifes car when I met her and it had 30000 miles on it at that time). 3. runs on the hot side even after the head gasket change. I've replaced the thermostat seeveral times and the water pump once and the radiator once. I finally removed the thermostat and let it run without one and the gage will still run in the middle. Also, the cooling fan works.
Transmission jerks hard when starting in drive. If you press too hard on accelerator, transmission will jerk hard. I will drive till goes out competely because of high cost to repair.
The speedometer has been broken since the date of purchase, the vehicle has been to the dealer on four separate occasions to have this problem fixed yet the problem still exist. Nlm
Speedometer has been replaced twice at considerable expense. Vss has been replaced once, transmission has been rebuilt once, and speedo gear which fits into the transmission have all been replaced once at considerable expense. Head gaskets have been replaced once, also at considerable expense. Speedo has now failed for the third time.
Consumer states that the speedometer swings back and forth, failing to indicate the correct speed, this mostly occurs when the cruise control is being used, consumer was informed that there was a recall, however the time to fix it had already expired.
While driving, the speedometer needle begins jumping sporadically and causes a whirling noise, the speedometer was first replaced at 26000 miles, consumer has had to replace speedometer twice and currently needs a new one, and is requesting that manufacturer pay for the replacement, however consumer was informed that the warranty has expired.

While driving speedometer waves back and forth over two-thirds of dial range, reading incorrect information, speedometer was replaced but failed again, speedometer failures reoccur at intervals of about 15,000 miles.
I am on my third speedometer failure. Each time the speedometer jumped all over the place making it impossible to know the accurate speed you are traveling. These speedometers cost $400 + to have replaced.
Consumer states that when the vehicle hits a bump in the road the speedometer needle will jump back and forth indicating different speeds. Nlm there is a service bulletin, SB051230, regarding this condition. Consumer was told by customer service that there were not enough complaints to open a recall. The speedometer assembly was replaced at owners expense at $657.20.
Speedometer has failed and been replaced 3 times since 38000 miles. Ford wants $500 for the part plus labor. They will not gurantee new speedometer parts in any way. I have no idea how fast I am travelling. This is a safety issue because I could be hit on the freeway if I am going too slow. I also don't like the idea of getting a ticket because of defective equipment.
All records of the 3 speedometers put in this car at greenhaw eddings - they have full service record since I purchased from my nephew in fl. While still under warranty. 2 speedometer were replaced under warranty. The 3rd one I had to pay half and supposedly greenhaw paid the other half. I did contact Ford motor asking if they were having significant problems. They said no>. when it was out of warranty it happened again and I felt Ford owed me replacement til it was fixed. The dealer said no. The service manager said on the last one it shouldn't happen again - I asked why -- he said because Ford had a new replacement. So they were having problems. Now is has over 100,000 miles on it and it is doing the same [xxx] thing again. When driving the speedometer acts loose the needle swings between 45mph and 70mph. It seems to me they owe me restitution and to fix this thing... I have never had such a problem and can't believe I am the only one.
