This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
- the contact called regarding the 1995 Ford Taurus. The contact stated that the front steering was pulling to the right. The steering wheel also vibrated. The vehicle was diagnosed as needing a realignment. The contact stated that the vehicle did not need an alignment before he took the vehicle to dealer for maintenance. The contact stated that the brakes and the bushings were replaced. The current and failure mileage were both 41,658 miles.
Brakes stopped working properly and started making a squeaking noise. Took vehicle to mechanic, they adjusted brakes, and replaced pads. This problem occurred every six months.
Head gaskets blewout while driving. Also, vehicle started smoking with coolant and oil coming from underneath vehicle. Contacted dealer, and had to replace engine. The motor mount cracked and ruined the A/C. intake was leaking coolant. Radiator was replaced. The engine light comes on intermittantly due to sensor failure. Brakes make noise.
While driving 45 mph vehicle suddenly accelerated, gas pedal just fell to floor. Consumer applied brakes, no reaction, engine kept going. At 90 mph consumer pulled key out of ignition to stop vehicle. Vehicle at dealer, who could not find cause. Consumer afraid to drive vehicle.
While driving could step on the brakes pedal and the brakes will grab and make noise like grinding metal to metal technician said that brakes needed a master cylinder, and calipers needed to be drilled. Consumer states the problem was detected before purchasing vehicle and dealership made a promise to fix all problems if consumer purchased the vehicle.
When applying brakes vehicle traveled an additional couple of feet before coming to a complete stop. Vehicle did not come to an immediate stop. This could cause a crash. Brakes were looked at by a mechanic. But, mechanic could not find a problem with the brakes.
When driving at 20-30 mph and upon attempting to make a graudal stop, vehicle continued to move forward, causing extended stopping distance. Consumer contacted dealer, dealer stated that metallic brake line rusted out, causing poor brake performance.
1. radiator - failed due to design defect in plastic to aluminum core joint, causing loss of coolant, replacement failed within one day. Replacement for that one lasted only about 20,000 additional miles, so a total of three identical radiator failures with loss of coolant in about 25,000 miles on the same car. Same problem on son's 1995 Taurus sedan with same engine. Original radiator failed, replacement failed within 1,000 miles of installation. This experience seems to indicate a fundamental design defect in the Taurus radiator. 2. brake failure. Defect in design of rear calipers used with ABS system on the Taurus results in rainwater intrusion causing rusting of caliper pins that then impedes proper retraction of the brake pads. Excessive pad wear results in metal to metal contact between the caliper piston and the pad backing plate with greatly reduced braking efficiency.
ABS system and the brakes are working intermittently. Vehicle was towed in and dealer decided there was no problem. Greased the rear calipers and adjusted brakes. No problem now.
While driving vehicle suddenly acclerated to 90 mph in seconds. Driver applied the brakes and they were inoperative. Had to use the emergency parking brake in order to stop vehicle. Dealer said it might be the passing gear or a vaccum hose which may have been clogged. Please provide further information and VIN#.
ABS brake problems; when applying the brakes the whole front end vibrates and shudders. This happens on any road condtions, under any type of braking situation. Also, brake pads, shoes and rotors were replaced in 1997 with 9,920 miles. 3,000 miles later the problem with the brakes reoccurred. The brake pads have since been replaced 2 more times, each time for defective warped pads.
Whenever vehicle is warm or hot it bucks or jerks. Have taken to repair shop & the transmission was replaced. Also, front end made clicking sounds. Rear brakes made hissing noises & then whenever applied, would make clunking noises. Will be taking vehicle to dealer.
