Ranger operated normally for a couple of years, I put very few miles on it. One day driving down the highway without warning it just started running rough and died. I sat there stunned for a couple of minutes and it started up and ran normally. A month later it did the same thing on a street, just died. This time when I tried to start, it began shaking violently and would stutter for about 15 seconds and then die. Repeated this over and over. After sitting for a half hour or so it would start up and run again. This started driving me crazy, so I took it to the dealer. Dealer could not get it to repeat. Took it to a Nascar engine shop, they couldn't figure it out either. Finally it just completely died and would not start. The dealer finally figured out it was the fuel pump and replaced it and no problems since. This was a common problem with many Rangers and saw it countless times on the forums. If your Ranger is dying for no reason take a look at the pump.
