So my car has 115K on it, and the transmission is going out. Pretty lame. I took it up to the mountains on the 4th of July weekend, and just as I got to the destination, the O/D off light started flashing and it began to shift EXTREMELY roughly. Oh great. Holiday weekend, I'm up on a mountain, and my car is going to DIE.
Well, I drove it carefully back down and brought it back into the shop on Tuesday and they pull a code for the torque converter. However, they can find absolutely nothing wrong once the code is cleared. My mechanics are awesome, but they didn't have an answer for this one. They tested it and it wasn't slipping or anything, so the only easy potential fix they could think of was to replace the speed sensor. Maybe the transmission was having trouble figuring out what speed it was going to shift correctly. Did that. Didn't work.
It's shifting way better with the code cleared (is that weird?) and the light hasn't come on again, but the transmission is definitely going. If it's up to temperature, it still shifts pretty rough, especially between the lower gears. I had to take the car on one last 15mile trip to get a piece of furniture moved (oh yeah, this happened while I was moving between towns.) and on the way back, I wasn't sure if it was going to make it.
Looking for a new car, though, I've been babying it along for another few hundred miles. I just don't drive it further than 3 or 4 miles a day if I can help it.
Ugh. I wrote another complaint or two about the engine in this thing, it's a gamble as to which will leave me stranded first.
I'm shopping for another car and my search does NOT include Ford vehicles.
