December 2016. After driving my 2000 Mustang for 16 safe and wonderful years all over the USA:
Upon entry to highway from 40 miles of country roads I kicked to 70 mph, pressed cruse control on (left) then set (right) car suddenly accelerated to 75, then 80 mpg, perplexed I pressed cruse off, no effect, now accelerated to 90. I eased brakes, car fought pulled slightly left, I pressed all steering wheel cruse controls, no effect. Braking knocked it down to 80 mpg, tried three times. My car was completely out of my control. I did not dare use the emergency brake at this speed as it was dumping left with the regular brakes.
I was still in the left highway lane and cars were going around me as I was braking so much. Really alarmed (my kids are with me) I pushed the handle it into neutral, it stopped lurching forward but the engine roared screaming out of control! Sometimes upon warm-up when it revs high, the engine idle comes down when you goose the pedal. Out of options I popped the pedal and the engine stopped screaming and calmed down. Oh my stars I finally had control of a run away car. I had 400 miles to drive to get home.
I was able to reach my mechanic who advised do not use the cruse control. Upon getting home safely he disconnected the cruse control motor and the linkage but could not find a new cruse control motor. Anyone know where we can find?
