This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
When the transmission shifts gears, the vehicle shatters. Campaign item#601237 the dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The cause was not determined.
This transmission was repaired in Nov. 1999 and currently has to be repaired again. Ford motor denies any knowledge of transmission problems. However, in researching the internet I found information saying the torque converters are bad and there are not enough of them to go around for a recall. This along with other articles indicating that Ford is aware of a problem with these transimission but won't fess up because of the cost factor. Moreover, in an article found @ epinions.com a service mgr. In fla. Refers to this problem as a "quiet recall."
The following problem has existed on this vehicle since the first summer I have owned it. When I place the gear selector in reverse or drive, the car surges, the RPM drops and fluctuates, and the vehicle either turns off or settles down. At times when I'm at a stop sign, I press the gas to go and the car hesitates and either stops or surges forward so I have to keep my foot on the brake and keep pushing on the gas pedal so the car won't stall on me in the middle of traffic. This has been an ongoing problem which has never been corrected by the dealership. I've taken the car to the dealership numerous times and have spoken to the service manager numerous times with no success. When I take the car in for service, I am always told the car was hooked up to the computer and that the computer found nothing wrong with the car. They've replaced parts on the vehilce but it continues to respond the same way. These problems always seem to be worse in the summer when the weather is hot and humid and has never been corrected. I don't know how to approach this matter. I know if I continue to take the car in to the dealership they are going to keep charging me for just hooking it up to the computer and finding nothing wrong with it when in reality there is something wrong with it. This has been going on for 7 years now and I don't know what to do.
While traveling cruise control will unexpectedly fail. Rpms for engine will increase, causing vehicle to slow down on its own. Transmission has been rebuilt twice for this problem. Please provide any additional information / attachments.
The specific failure of the part in automatic transmission is called torque converter. This part in the transmission is reponsible for shifting the gears. Through my personal investigations, I have found out that Ford vehicles before the year 1999 have had problems with the torque converters, regardless of the make of the vehicle. With so much compelling evidence about the failure of torque converters in Ford vehicles, it shocks me that there hasn't been a recall mandated by the government. Ford refuses to pay for this defect! please help me in rendering justice.
Head gasket failed prior to notification and was replaced, consumer was reimbursed for repiars,2 weeks later transmission went out, the mechanic advised that the transmission going out which was a result of overheating from previous head gasket problem, also transmission mounts were replaced 3 times, rebuilt torque converter.
I have identical head gasket, engine, transmission and paint peeling problems as thousands of other Mustang owners. I am not going to take this anymore from Ford I am contacting them one last time. On April 16 I will start a public awareness campiagn in my area to inform everyone of my probelms with Ford and their products. I want my car fixed. Ford knows about these probelms and will not fix them. I have a blown head gasket and no money to fix this new yard ornament.
Engine head gasket failed on way to work car was towed to manteca Ford and heads torn down, head gasket and additional work estimated at $2200, refused work at that time, had car repaired at later date, total cost $900. Automatic transmission/ overdrive failure while driving in town, car taken to garage 10 components repaired or replaced, total cost $1583.77. Car has only 82,000 miles on odometer and is not raced or used in a haphazard manner, it is main transportation to and from work (round trip 1.5 mi) and as travel car for vacation, has never towed another vehicle nor been in any accidents or incidents. Believe head gasket failure precipitated by electric cooling fan failure 3 mos. Prior. Fan replaced at personal cost, no problems.
Automatic transmission failed within 50,000 miles. Will not engage 3rd gear and now requires a complete rebuild. Failure occured at 55mph when trans violently shifted from overdrive into 2nd.
When crusing between 2nd or 3rd gear the car will begin to shake like I'm going over railroad tracks. This will stop if I speed up, but many people have complained about this in Ford 94-96 3.8L automatic transmissions. Please refer to www.alldata.tsb.com/tsb/19/95191711.html. they have info on a service bulletin (#28 Dec. 98) that looks like it would describe the problem. When I'm between 3rd and 4th gear on the highway it also happens around 50 mph. It feels like the car is going to fall apart.
Intermitent loss of tourque converter during or after third and fourth transmission shift. Also, transmission is slipping.consumer contacted dealer and manufacturer.
Car overheated. Had thermostat replaced. Car overheated again, and had to have timing gasket replaced. Car overheated again and just had head gasket replaced in January., one month later, have to have transmission rebuilt. In all fairness to Ford, they offered to pay 50% of trans. Repairs. I asked if they would pay 75% due to the fact that I can no longer afford to keep this car running properly after all the repairs I already paid for. Have not heard anything back from Ford on the 75%. car still in need of repairs. Will not go into 2nd gear and now O/D light flashes on dashboard.
While driving about 25 mph and switching gears the transmission makes a grinding noise. Dealer told consumer that they know about the problem with the vehicle.
