Problem: Battery dies overnight in my driveway around 2-3 times a week. Have to get a jump start. Then it starts up right away and runs all day. Never happens anywhere else. Just in my driveway.
Attempted solution: took to a dealer twice.
First time was with the 2017 Ford Fusion, the same model, I bought last year in February, which had the same problem. Dealer could not find the problem or fix it, so we lemoned it out with Ford, which was a major pain in the ass because they don't always follow the law, especially if they think you can be bullied. Finally got it switched out to an identical model of the 2018, in December. After switching the problem out, I received a recall notice from Ford saying they had a fix for the problem! Said they discovered a drain in the transmission, needed reprogramming.
Second time was with the new 2018 Ford Fusion, same model, same problem. Only dies in my driveway overnight. Took it to another dealer who spent two months testing it and couldn't find anything wrong in the shop. Went over it very diligently. Never died once in the shop, only at home. Brought it home and this morning it did the same thing again. What's going on is a complete mystery, but it's a pain in the ass.
Analysis: These car computers can be electronically hacked, as shown scientifically by a General Accounting Office Study Report: https://www.gao.gov/assets/680/676064.pdf. This isn't a conspiracy theory, it's real. They can even take over your car and make it speed and control the brakes and steering and lock your doors. They think reporter Michael Hastings was crashed and killed in his BMW this way. Who would do this? I have no idea. All I know is that these computer modules are not shielded, and there are several portals. All I know is that this only happens at my driveway and then it happens several times a week.
They can get in wirelessly in several ways, including through your Bluetooth telephone connection. I think it must be my home modem that is getting into the computer in my car. I have cell phones paired with the car computer that are often linked to my modem. I don't know if the hack is intentional or not, but it doesn't happen with the loaner Fusion I borrowed which was a Platinum Fusion.
