The engine was replaced prior to me purchasing the vehicle (crate short block code DR202100c) by a Ford dealer. I purchased the vehicle with the “new†engine at 42,354 miles and by 61,500 miles the water pump had failed. The engine only ran for 19,146 miles prior to the pump failing. In order to replace the pump, the entire engine has to be lifted from the vehicle.
I traded a Toyota Camry for this vehicle. The Camry had 300,000 miles on it and never had a engine problem. All preventive maintenance was always done on this vehicle. I tried to do the same with my "NEW" Ford Fusion. Like I said I got 300,000 miles out of the Toyota but the Fusion motor is junk at 76,000 miles. Research has shown me that the engine is piss poor design and invites complete failure. So far the Ford dealership has offered me a new Ford long block with a three year warranty for $7000 or a 5k used engine for $2800. I called in a complaint to Fords call center in the Philippines. Don't you know that was a fun filled time. I was told that Ford would be in contact with the service manager that I have been working with but that has not happened yet. Don't know how long this will take but I hope soon because the 1999 Miata has to be in storage before the snow flies.
