The Evap purge valve solenoid was stuck open causing the engine to idle extremely rough. After approximately a month of this issue beginning to surface, the check engine light came on and a code reading showed an evap system failure. Once the check engine light came on the problem progressed into a major problem. After refueling, the engine would stall repeatedly unless the driver brings the engine rpm over 3,000 for a few seconds. This is apparently a COMMON issue because there was an 8 week backorder on replacement parts nationwide.
This is something that can be fixed via replacement if someone knows how to work on vehicles, but the lack of available parts required me to pay the dealership to replace my purge valve assembly. The purge valve solenoid is part of an entire assembly including multiple Evap lines. This part CANNOT be replaced independent of these lines because the individual part is not available for purchase.
The Ford Focus was recently recalled for what appears to be this exact problem. It's been nearly 8 months since the assembly was replaced, and my fusion appears to be in the beginning stages of Evap purge valve failure again. Time will tell if the intermittently rough idle progresses into the same problem again.
