Transmission slipping and hard shifting is not what I expect from a Ford with 38,000 miles.

Fusion S 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,000 miles

I bought this Fusion with 48,000 miles on it from a certified Ford dealer. From the day I got the car the transmission has been absolutely horrendous. The car now has 62,000 miles on it and it has only gotten worse over time. At random times when the transmission is attempting to shift into another gear the car will hesistate and all of a sudden slam into the next gear, so aggressively so that it almost feels like you’re getting rear ended. The transmission is also extremely slow to shift into reverse, it consistently takes 2-4 seconds to actually get into reverse after shifting into reverse, and when trying to parallel park or making a three point turn with other cars or other obstacles behind you that you can potentially hit this is awful. I’ve came so close to hitting the car behind me while parallel parking because the car will sit in neutral and roll back before actually getting into gear more times than I can count. The single worst transmission I have ever driven in my entire life and I will be getting rid of this car ASAP.

I got horrible service from my Ford Dealer. They threw my mechanic under the bus after he had told me my transmission was finished. They said their computer "didn't bring up any codes". They took it for a ride and told me it wasn't slipping, slow shifting of revving when in fact that's exactly what I had experienced several times. The first time I had problems, I was paralleled parked downtown and when I went to drive off, I shifted into drive, but when I pressed the accelerator, my car went into reverse. Another time I was in the parking lot at work, parked on a decline, with rows of cars parked in front and behind me. I put my car in reverse, and again went forward when I pressed the accelerator. I just about rear-ended the person in front of me. That is when I took my car in to my mechanic...who told me I needed a new transmission at a cost of $4000.

Subsequently took it to my dealer and was told it was fine. Took it on the freeway and at 100km, my car shifted into neutral and was revving badly. It was extremely scary!

The dealer had my car for 2 months to complete the job. I got the constant runaround and no updates as to why it was taking so long. They were unsuccessful getting a new transmission apparently, so they got a re-manufactured transmission and told me the cost of that job was $5900. I got Ford Assistance and paid out only $1500. However the headaches I had to endure and the horrible customer service was enough.

I love my Fusion and had never had issues....but after this I will NEVER buy a Ford again! I was made to feel like I was being difficult, when all I wanted was for the dealership where I bought it to take ownership for Ford's faulty parts.

The transmission slips often, jerks and stalls. The Ford company would not take the car back or address the situations. I have so many complaints its unreal. Between the tires, transmission and a/c noise, I'll never buy another car from the Ford.

I had this Fusion in at the dealer 5 times for the same problem. The transmission sometimes slams into gear. It feels like you are being rear ended. It also revs high and won’t upshift. It’s like it can’t decide what gear it wants to be in. The dealer changed some solenoids which helped a little, but the slamming into gear and clunking in between gears remains. And each time the dealer says they cannot find any issues. I wrote to Ford and they sent a technician to the dealer to check the car out. Of course he said there is no problem. I now have 49K miles on this and I am basically stuck with it. Never again will I buy a Ford. I suggest you don’t either.

I started having trouble with the transmission shortly after buying the car from a Used Car Dealer. I talked with a Ford dealer about a recall and he seemed annoyed with me. I had a car repair shop look at the transmission and said that they felt that there was something definitely wrong with the transmission. I talked with a repair shop that looked at the transmission. They said that they couldn't fix it. I finally took it to a Certified Transmission Shop and they said that the transmission was faulty and that that model and year of Ford used a new type of transmission that was very problematic. He said that it needed a new transmission. He tried to do something to the transmission to try to fix or reset or something but he said that it did no good. He said that it needs a new transmission. I was wondering if I can get Ford to pay for a new transmission that works. The problem continues to get worse.

I bought this brand new Ford Fusion in 2014 and within the first few days I had to bring it back to the dealer for a slipping problem. The dealer checked it out and said they could not find anything wrong. I took it back there 3 more times and got no results. Finally I took it to another dealer and they said they had to change all of the shift solenoids. Still have the same problem. Ford said that's how that transmission is suppose to act, and they were not going to do anything else to it. So much for Ford standing behind their warranty.

P.S. The car only has 7300 miles on it.

This 2014 fusion has had a transmission issue since the day I drove off the lot. The dealer said they reset the code and I tell them it is still not right so they told me that they all shift that way. so now the motor is starting to rattle @ 20k miles and someone at ford needs to take note of this problem.

For a vehicle to be so new, and to have the transmission jump the way it does is very unsettling. I believe it's due to faulty transmission computer, or something of the sort. I say this because it reminds me of an issue I've had with another vehicle. I feel this issue needs to be taken care of by Ford as the transmission is a necessity and avoiding fixing the issue will only harm the engine at a very rapid pace.

  • Automatic transmission
  • 19,640 miles

On my way to California at about 75 mph I passed a slower car after I released the throttle I felt a bang like the transmission slipped out of gear then it did it again on my way to work a couple weeks latter. So I called Ford and they said bring it in but that's not easy because I work 13 hour days 6 days a week.

So I performed what is called a Global Reset, disconnect the battery terminals negative first then the positive wait a minimum of 30 seconds, then hold both terminals together for at least 15 seconds, reconnect positive first. Seems to have done the trick I've been killing bugs problem free since the procedure. I will let you guys know either way in a couple of weeks.

By the way, I really like this car but not so much that I won't get rid of it if becomes a problem child.

Out of nowhere my car started to shift hard from second gear into third and downshifting from third into second. When upshifting at light to medium throttle there is a one second delay where the car holds on to second gear, stops accelerating then slams into third gear. When slowing down to a stop you can feel a hard thunk when it finds second gear. The odd thing is, in all of the other gears up-shifts and downshifts are smooth. I get the same old "...they all do that" when I brought the issue up to the dealer.... Seriously?! if that's the case, why didn't it shift like that from day one?

Driving on the interstate just outside of Chicago with lots of traffic going 80+ mph when the transmission starts to rev and I can't pass anyone. Feeling like this could be a dangerous situation because I can't get out of anyone's way if necessary.

Drove home with the transmission whining from low gear to a higher gear, not sure which one, and only able to cruise about 35 mph. Called two nearby dealers who are both backed up with transmission problems. Go figure. Only one, the furthest one away, can even look at it tomorrow and who knows what the issue will be eventually.

Ford doesn't provide loaners unless you buy the extended warranty, which I did because I have high mileage use, but still have to leave the car indefinitely and hope it doesn't exceed 10 days which is the coverage for the loaner.

Starting to question the wisdom of buying a Ford. Yes, every car mfr. can have problems, but a car less than a year old with a transmission issue is unsettling.

I've recently purchased this new Fusion. Transmission has got hung in low gear. Had to place in sport mode and manually shift. Also a few times it shifts hard. Not as smooth and clean as it should shift. Going to the dealership tomorrow. Hopefully they can find the problem. Doubt it, because it's intermittent.

Fusion SE 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,000 miles

Recently Purchased a New 2014 Pre owned Ford Fusion SE auto trans. After some driving I began to notice the transmission shifting NOT as smooth as it should be, when stopping it downshifts hard. NOT all the time but enough to get noticed. At higher speed, or passing another car, when I punch the gas pedal, at least 2 out 3 times the transmission delays to go into the higher gear or overdrive, when it does it causes a Bang or it Kicks. This happens several times a week. The car seems to run fine other than these headache issues.

The dealer can't duplicate the problem. I have brought the car in because of this several times, at this moment Problem still exists.

Update from Apr 12, 2016: Here we are at almost 80 K and at Many attempts to fix this HORRIBLE intermittent Transmission Shifting Issue with the Dealer in Town and Customer Ford Relations, i have almost given up at times, this year and Recently i said i have had Enough of this Intermittent Shifting issue.. a Mechanic i met who restores vehicles told m tht my problem will go undetected, it wont send a trouble code to my dash. because the problem is in the information relayed from the computer or firmware to the transmission. it appears that there is a gap in the information being sent when a shift needs to take place.. This shifting issue i have felt is not longer acceptable to me and i am making Ford aware of it.. I have put up with it long enough. NUMerous time to the dealer with No serious Correction.. The dealer is aware there is an issue.. but Ford is Refusing to to Correct the problem. at this point i have given ford an ultimatum Fix it or i will escalate this to Other Entities. such as BBB or Anyother way to get this exposed... i am currently for the third time working with Ford Customer services, lets see what they.. and by the way I will no longer purchase the Ford Product... with my next Vehicle..

Considering the low mileage on this vehicle, I am extremely disappointed to be noticing this problem. I mentioned to dealer at first oil change when it was only noticeable as an occasional hard shift. They said it shouldn't be doing that. Second oil change is coming up, and I'll be bringing the problem to their attention again, especially since there is a very noticeable delay and revving between 2nd and 3rd gears.

And though the transmission is a major concern, a second little pain in the butt was having to replace the rear shocks. Took a 2,000 mile round trip, 4 adults with a fully loaded trunk which for the last few hundred miles also contained the extra weight of 3 cases of US beer we brought home. Two days home and both rear shocks were leaking. I am not impressed. And I don't want to be messing around with transmissions either. Don't care what the problems is, don't want excuses. Ford made the car, put in a transmission and to me the buck stops there. Ford needs to fix it and not tell me it's just breaking in.
