Last night while leaving church, my wife said her door (front passenger) would not close. I figured the latch was in the closed position somehow, but when I looked it was in the open position. I tested the latch with a pen, and it would not lock in the closed position. My research showed that this was a common problem that resulted in some massive recalls.
HOWEVER, when I called my dealership, they told me that my VIN did not fall in any of the recalls. Having previously worked on Fords for a local shop in the early 2000s, I told them that I had never actually seen a latch failure in various Fords (mostly Mustangs) ranging from the 1950s through 2004 or so. They acknowledged it was extremely rare but that their hands were tied since Ford said the recall did not affect my car.
The failure appears to be that whatever spring is in place to hold the latch closed has failed. The dealership refused to work with me at all. We have been buying Fords there since at least 1996. They suggested I take this up with Ford. The last time I had to fight with Ford (a warranty repair where the wrong transmission was installed in my then Mustang back in 2002), it took a few months for Ford to correct the problem. My door will not latch. I cannot even lock my car. So I cannot waste weeks or months trying to get Ford to correct their problem. Instead, I am ordering a new assembly and installing it myself tomorrow or over the weekend.
This will be my last Ford.
