CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Fusion doesn’t have the same track record of power steering failure as the previous 3 model years. Of course, those owners said their steering failed at 60k–100k miles. So this appears to be a classic "wait and see" scenario.

In the meantime, there’s plenty of interior accessory problems to complain about. By themselves, each is a barely a blip on the radar. But combined, they give you that feeling of what the hell have I gotten myself into?

The damn light came on when I was traveling down the highway my car stopped accelerating so I pulled off engine started to smoke. Let it cool down and then it wouldn't start. I had to have a tow truck get it - the man couldn't even get it to shift into neutral. Due to pandemic I'm without money other than little here and there and now I'm without a car.

Fusion Ecoboost 1.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 39,768 miles

My car went into "limp home mode' on Christmas eve 2016 while in Northern Ontario. The wrench and call mechanic light was on. The car was towed to the nearest Ford dealership (approximately 100 kms). I was informed that the electronic throttle body component had to be replaced. the car was two weeks and 4000 kms beyond its 3 year replacement warranty. I had to pay the full cost of repairing it. When I contacted Ford they said they had done a recall only on the 2.5 L and that I was not covered.

Here is part of their response:

"I am sorry that you had to replace your throttle body on your Fusion and it was not covered under the Ford provided warranty. The coverage for this part was for 3 years or 60,000 kilometers whichever occurs first from the warranty start date which on your vehicle was December 7, 2013.

Ford is proactive in trying to identify areas of concern through investigating consumer and dealer feedback. Customer Satisfaction Programs are voluntary announcements by Ford. A CSP is activated as appropriate when there is a concern about a particular component. These programs are vehicle specific and they have a specific start and expiration date. In CSP's, unlike recalls, repairs are to be made ONLY if the described condition occurs so not all models of our vehicles would be involved in such a warranty extension.

Please save your receipt and if a program like the one you found online does come out and your vehicle is part of that, you would be able to apply for a reimbursement with your paid receipt through your local Ford dealer."

I am very angry that I have to wait until enough other Ford Fusion owners have this problem and complain before they will reimburse me for this expense. I have been a Ford owner for over 30 years but this may soon change.

Fusion SE 1.6L Ecoboost

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,000 miles

The engine all of the sudden lost power while cruising on highway speeds going uphill and the wrench light appeared on the dash which indicates transmission issues. The code resets when I turn off the car and the symbol goes away. But the fault shows up again shortly after driving more. This happened during a really long 11 hr journey and hasn't happened on shorter trips or daily commutes. The service tech's could not figure out the problem or replicate it, so they did not fix anything.

wrench warning light on

Yellow Wrench light keep coming on while driving only down the Highway at 65 to 70 MPH, It also intermittent therefore the dealer cannot ever find Problem Codes. The Codes erase when you turn off the car.

I lose Half of Engine Power and no other controls work such as Cruise Control and Manual Shifting Paddle Shifting. I was also told that it was my : "PCM" that is giving me the trouble.

Also The Electric Fan is running at full speed blowing out cold Air, plus the smell of Burning Plastic. Also when the car is started and running for about 7 to 10 minutes, I turn on the heater at 73 Degrees and it is warm. Then after turning on the heater and now leaving for work, I accelerate to get onto the freeway and soon noticed that the heater is now blowing cold air and I then turn the heater up higher to 77 then the same warmth come out then that goes away til I turn the heater way up to 83 Degrees.

This has never happened before, I had the Coolant and Oil Replaced and it is still doing the same thing. I get two Warnings showing The Yellow Wrench, "Power Reduced to cool down Engine" and "Engine Overheat"

The Sunnyvale Ford Dealer Charged me $200.00 Dollars to see what was wrong with my car and said they have found nothing. But this Problem Only happens on the freeway driving at 65 to 75 MPH. Our freeways speed limits are high on Interstates 5. I do see older Ford Tempo's going 80 MPH and passing me while I cannot go faster to get out of the way of others. Quite insulting to me while I spend out of pocket and ford says nothing and i get back a broken car that works sometimes.

The Extended Warranties I pay for does not cover anything so I'm paying for a car that is soon to fail and leave me stranded at the same time I have to pay for it. Ford Continue to say my car is running well and leave me standing there to pay their cashier money for NOTHING. Although I like the fusion but ford is not wanting to Stand by their products and I think I'm going to leave fords and get a Toyota. I'm sorry I am upset with this fusion and ford.

Update from May 2, 2016: Ford Motor Company has listened and worked with the Ford Dealer to correct my problem...No more Wrench Lights or Engine Lights. My vehicle is working well and has taken it out on a trip in the High Sierras and no problems.

The Problem was lead to me taking my car to Firestone for a Transmission Fluid Replacement. Firestone has put in the fluid and damaged the Sensor that is used to keep the signal of the transmission to the PCM talking. The result was that the Sensor was not communicating to the PCM caused my Transmission to ether overheat and send my car into limp mode. The Technician has taken my car on a drive for more than 50 miles at constant freeway speeds of 70 MPH for it to throw CODES. That was the only way. Driving it in the City it drives fine with no problems. I have had to tell the Service Members and the Advisor 4 TIMES THAT YOU NEED TO DRIVE THE CAR ON THE FREEWAY FOR 30 TO 50 MILES AT SPEEDS OF 70 MPH IN ORDER FOR THE CODES TO SHOW. Finally the car is running correctly and no problems. Never take your car to Firestone for any Transmission work, just give it to the Dealer for that service. Firestone has screwed up the wiring in the Sensors in the transmission inner parts.
