CarComplaints.com Notes: Ford significantly updated the Fusion for the 2010 model year. We wish they hadn't

Throttle body issues have led to a ton of reports about a sudden deceleration and loss of power while driving. Ford issued a “customer satisfaction program” in March 2014 that, unsurprisingly, has left very few customers satisfied.

2010 is also the year we started seeing complaints about the power steering failing. Throttle and steering failure? Yeah, that’s why this is a clunker.

Traveling approximately 70-75 mph on us highway vehicle lost power and entered into a limited power "limp home" mode, dropping engine to idle speed and causing a wrench light to activate on the dash and activation of "check engine" light. Vehicle losing power nearly resulted in motor vehicle collision with other vehicles. After moving to shoulder of roadway and shutting off vehicle and turning it back on the problem corrected for approximately 2 miles where issue occurred again, this time at speeds approximately 60 mph. After shutting off and powering back on vehicle the problem again corrected for less than a mile. Vehicle continued same problem after shutdown another 8 times within 5 miles. Only roadside correction to issue was to remove negative battery cable to reset computer. After completing this task vehicle would run normally for approximately 10 miles where issue would return. Vehicle was taken to shop where a diagnostic computer showed codes of P2112 and P2111, throttle actuator stuck open and throttle actuator stuck closed. Required repair appears to be complete removal and replacement of electronic throttle body assembly.

Was driving for about 1 mile, then all of a sudden car was still running but no throttle on a very busy road lucky was able to get pull over. I feel that a car with only 45,504 miles should not done that. I keep my maintenance up to date. And was not cover under my warranty. That's $ $450 I didn't have { throttle body} that's is the first time I have felt unsafe driving my car. For being a woman that could have been on the interstate at a faster speed it could have been a disaster for everyone. Thank you.

I pulled out of my office parking lot onto higway and car stalled and seem not to get gas. Engine light came on and I had to shut car off and restart it until I got to a auto shop and there they put it on the computer and said I had to take it to the dealership which I had it towed the next day because it was after the dealership closed. They kept it for 3 days said it was the accelerator which they replaced said it was fixed. 2 weeks later the engine light came on again and so I took it back to them they replaced my catalyic converter said it was fixed. About a month later the same thing happen so I took it back to the dealership and they kept if for 3 days and said they couldn't find the problem because it didn't show up on the computer. I have taken it back to them 3 more times in which the last time I that it out with the service manager and owner. Finally I took it to another Ford dealership and they kept it until they found the problem which was a bad throttle body which I had been telling the other dealership service manager and owner all along. I had to pay $505.43 to get it fixed because my waranty had gone out. Car is now fixed I pray but it took taking it to another Ford dealership.

Driving on interstate at highway speeds (65mph+), car suddenly lost power and slowed, shuddering as it stopped. Difficult to restart, able to continue on driving for several miles before occurring again. Had vehicle towed to Ford dealer in the area for service. Diagnosed as throttle body failure; dealer service has replaced throttle body as of 5/3/2013.

I was just leaving the street from our subdivision during morning rush hour, made a right hand turn when there was a break in traffic and just as I was accelerating the engine just seemed to die. I was able to steer the car to the side of the street to get out of traffic and discovered that the car was still running at a rough idle and a "wrench" symbol showed up on my dash. When the traffic cleared I was able to back up into the street into our subdivision, got the car turned around and drove back to my house at less than 5mph. After letting the car set for a while I started it up and it ran fine. I then called a mechanic and explained what happened and asked him to check it out, which he agreed to do. During the drive to the mechanic the same problem occurred about 1/2 mile from his location and I was again able to get out of the flow of traffic and made it to his location. After leaving the car at his location I went on line to research if any other 2010 Fusion owners had experienced the same problem and found that there were hundreds that had, many of whom contacted Ford with no luck in getting them to acknowledge the problem. The problem appears to be associated with the throttle body assembly. I also called Ford to discuss this with them and asked why they had not initiated a recall on this vehicle since so many people had this problem and it was what I considered to be an extreme safety hazards for drivers when this happened. I was told that this was not an issue for which a recall notice had been initiated. I have had Ford products for over 40 years and was very surprised that this was the kind of response I got. I am surprised that someone has not initiated a class action suit against them for this problem since it is such a serious safety hazard.

I too experienced the same issue as I have seen repeatedly reported with the throttle body needing to be replaced. Fortunately I was not in heavy traffic and was going at a lower rate of speed, when suddenly there was no response when trying to accelerate. I pulled over into a parking lot where my vehicle began to stall. The wrench light came on. I turned off my engine and when restarted the wrench light was no longer light up. I was able to drive safely home. I called the dealership the next morning and attempted to bring the vehicle in. I was only able to drive approximately a quarter of a mile and the same loss of response to the throttle and stalling occurred when I pulled back into my driveway. I had to have my vehicle towed. The dealership indicated the throttle body needed to be replaced and there was a "nationwide backorder" for the part. I inquired why was there a backorder? the service representative replied that was a good question he did not know. Perhaps it is because so many need to be replaced! I was quoted $420. I called local automotive parts stores and they all said they did not have the part and referred me back to the dealer, it appears it is very easy to replace, you can youtube it. Also I read the code will only appear if the wrench light is still light. I am very dissatisfied that Ford does not take this issue seriously. I have read numerous reports on many website searches indicating this is a very common problem for the 2010 Fusion. They should be recalled and replaced at no charge. How hideous to think someone could be injured or loose their life for something that could and should be easily rectified. Shame on you Ford. Unfortunately I will probably not purchase another Ford vehicle because of this and I had really liked my car up until now. This issue should be investigated immediately. Stop waiting.

My wife was accelerating through an intersection and car stalled. Luckily an oncoming vehicle was able to swerve out of way and my wife was able to steer the car to the shoulder. It would not restart and I came and switched cars with her. After 5 minutes it started and I was able to drive home after 4-5 more stalls on my 2 mile ride home. Stalled on way to dealer on Monday and they advised needed to replace a throttle body at a cost of over $500. Only had car for 35 mths but since over miles the warranty wouldn't cover it. After checking with other mechanics was able to see about 32 other incidents that required same repair on 2010 Fusion 2.5L engine. But when spoke with a Ford area mgr they claimed would do nothing and there is no issues with this car or part?

The first incident occurred a few months ago. As I was accelerating from a stopped position at a stop light, the car's engine seemed to lose power and wrench light came on. I rolled to a stop at the corner of the intersection, and put the vehicle in park. In park, the engine began to shake so, I turned the vehicle off. After a minute I turned the vehicle back on, the car seemed to run fine afterwards with no check engine light. Yesterday (4/30/13), the car stalled again. This time I was going 40 mph and had to pull promptly to shoulder to avoid being hit by the unsuspecting driver behind me. I turned off the engine and restarted the car. I was able to go a few feet before the car stalled again. This time the check engine light came on, and I was unable to operate the vehicle above 900 rpms. I had the car towed to a Ford dealership who said I needed a new throttle body assembly. The car had around 38,000 miles at the time of incident. Upon research, I discovered this is a know problem, and Ford has yet to issue a recall to prevent future crashes and injury. Something needs to be done!!

My car started to stall and went into limp home mode. It immediately went to 1000 rpms and lost all power. The engine light came on. I had to go across all lanes of traffic on a busy highway and almost got hit. A commonly known problem with the throttle body is the most likely cause.

This morning while traveling the interstate with cruise control set at 75mph my car had a swift jerking motion and lost all acceleration accident was a near miss trying to get off highway to emergency lane. Towed to Ford dealer and right away they knew it was a throttle body failure. Car showed no signs of anything being wrong until incident occurred. Throttle body replaced at my expense due to they say not covered under powetrain warranty. Ford obviously knows there is a problem with this and refuses to acknowledge it at this time. Have read several forums of numerous other people with same problem and ran across article of your investigation of Ford. Ford should be held responsible for there faulty parts. In the right situation some is going to lose there life related to this problem.

At any given time, usually when we are driving the car over 25 miles an hour, the car will abruptly stutter and then stall. This is a very dangerous situation since when I am on the interstate, the vehicle will turn off while we are in heavy traffic. We have researched this issue and several hundred owners have the same problem which appears to be with the throttle body assembly. We called Ford and they said that we need to take it in. For a potential serious dangerous situation, there was a lack of care and concern on their part. I believe that someone should investigate the stalling of this vehicle and mandate that Ford resolve this problem.

As I accelerated from a red light, the car sputtered and seemed to stall. The wrench light flashed on but didn't stay on. Since it drove fine after that, we didn't take it in. About a month later, it happened again. I researched it online and realized many people are having the same problem. We called Ford and scheduled an appointment. It happened 6 times in a 20 minute drive before we got it. Ford replaced (at a charge to us!) the throttle body and it has been fine since.

On three separate occasions around the incident date, my 2010 Fusion had a sudden loss of power accompanied by a rough idle. The "wrench light" came on during each incident. Each time I moved the car to the side of the road, shut it down and restarted it. Each restart took a prolonged time before the engine would turn over. After each restart, the car ran fine. The first time the incident happened I had a vehicle behind me and was nearly rear ended. I ended up taking the car to the dealership for repair. Dealership was unable to duplicate the problem. Given the information about the malfunction symptoms as well as the triggering of the "wrench light" I was able to provide, the service advisor along with the lead technician agreed that the throttle body was the likely problem and performed the repair. Due to the fact the car was approx. 3 months past the 3yrs of the 3yrs/36K warranty it was not covered. This repair was also not covered by the epa or power train warranty nor was it a covered part on my extended warranty. This resulted in a repair being paid out of pocket. It does seem likely that Ford Motor Co. Is aware of this problem as the replacement throttle body has an updated part number (part # ds7Z9E926A) from the original listed part. This information about the updated part number was provided by the service advisor at the dealership. In addition to the throttle body being replaced, an update to the vehicle computer was also required. Since the writing of this complaint, the car has not had any further incidences of loss of power.

I was driving through a busy intersection when there was no throttle response at alll. I managed to pull over to the side of the road and shut engine off. Waited a few minutes and restarted engine again. Had no problems for the rest of the day. That evening me and my young son were going out for dinner when I tried to merge into fast moving traffic the throttle response was not there. I had to swerve sharply to the right to avoid being rear ended by a semi-truck going 65 miles an hour. Needless to say I had the vehicule towed to the dealer for repairs. The 3 year warrenty had exspired but the vehicule only had 25000 miles on it.I was quoted around $600 for replacement of the throttle body. This part should not have failed within the amount of miles that wee on it. I feel that Ford Motor Company knows about this problem and is waiting for someone to lose their life before they have a recall on the part.

On the highway with my little girl in the back going 65 mph, then suddenly the car went limp, lost all power. I barely made it the shoulder. I was so scared I took my daughter out the car and stand her on the far side of the road. The car was idling very rough, with the service engine wrench on. I had it towed, but I could have saved some cash because after restarting the car it ran fine. The dealer said they could not find anything wrong ' no error code, they test drive it and could not duplicate the issue. Turns out if you shut the car off it clears the error code, how stupid is this! who is going to keep the car running while getting a tow. I drove it for about a month then it happen again, and sure enough on the highway again. I took it back to the dealer and from my research on the web I told them to change the throttle box, ' let's hope this fix the issue.

This is the second time my 2010 Ford Fusion stalled while driving on the freeway. The car will just start limping and will not accelerate. Once I maneuver the car safely onto the side of the freeway and turn the car off I am normally successful in restarting the car and resuming my commute. The check engine light will stay on, and once you refuel the vehicle all symptoms and warning lights are no longer present. This problem is an obvious safety hazard and needs to be addressed by Ford's engineers.

Read in paper that you were looking at Ford throttle body. I was in fast lane on I-66 on a Friday afternoon. Suddenly car stopped. I was lucky there was room on left apron to pull off. Car restarted when I tried--went 1000 feet and stopped again; now in right lane and pulled off. Knew there was an off ramp 1/4 mile ahead and limped on apron with cars passing. The entire situation was very dangerous in my estimation. When restarting, it was hard to tell if auto was running or not. When restarting auto backfired etc. Prior to this incident had reported to Ford dealer that transmission sometime "clunked" when I put auto in reverse in the morning. They found no problem. Have not had this problem since I paid to have the throttle body replaced.

My wife was turning left into a parking space in a parking lot at 2mph or less when the vehicle suddenly accelerated at high rpms. Our vehicle slammed into the vehicle to the right of the space my wife would have entered. Heavy damage was caused to our veh. And to the parked veh. My wife was unsure if she had caused the acdt or if it was a mechanical defect. Because of the very heavy and rapid acceleration, I didn't think it in any way was driver error. After it was repaired, our 2010 Fusion was checked out by a Ford dealer and nothing was found amiss. A year later in Nov. Of 2012, I was driving the car at approximately 50mph when the engine suddenly revved up about 150 to 200rpms. This didn't cause any great acceleration but, considering my wife's experience, I immediately shifted to neutral. Just as I got into neutral, the engine revved up to 2500 to 3000rpms. Had the car been in drive, a collision could have happened or I could have lost control. Ford was contacted, car inspected, again nothing wrong. A service writer tried to tell us that the rubber floor mat was on the accelerator pedal. The mat doesn't gain weight to suddenly depress the pedal all by itself! Ford's great lakes regional manager was not very forthcoming-she wasn't apparently aware that there were youtube videos of 2010 Fusion owners filming their dashboards as their cars did the same as I have described above. The car is being driven regularly but both of us have a hand on the gear shift alot of the time. Considering our experiences and the youtube postings, I think Ford is trying to avoid an expensive recall. Didn't Toyota use the floor mat excuse for years?
