I heard a loud clunk, then started hearing a noise that sounded a little like cards attached to a bicycle spoke, a fan-like rattle. I couldn't see anything in the engine compartment, and didn't see anything under the car. It slowed as the car slowed. I couldn't afford to take it to the shop, & no engine lights came on, so I just kept driving it, but avoided driving long distances. After a few months. I took the car to work and was told there was something hanging out from under the car. A workman took a look under the car and said it was a plate that was intended to protect the engine from debris flying into it from the road. It had broken free and was hanging down, dragging. He offered to cut it free if he had time. He didn't. I drove the car home, where it came completely loose, caught under a tire and caused dragging. I was worried that it would cause something ELSE to break off, and went home. Taking another car, I looked for the dislodged piece but couldn't find it.
The car still makes the ruffling/rattling noise, but it's softer now. (Smaller piece dragging??) I've had the oil changed recently, and the repairman didn't say a word about anything missing or dragging-except that I needed new tires. AAAAARGGGHHHHHH!!
