The contact owns a 2006 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that a plastic piece over the button on the gear shift broke inside the shifter. The broken piece caused the vehicle not to acknowledge that the vehicle was is in park and caused the key to become stuck in the ignition. The dealer stated that the entire gear shift needed to be replaced. The contact was concerned about numerous complaints regarding the gear shift and the key for his year, make and model vehicle. The contact stated that this was a safety concern since it may be difficult to detect that the broken pieces were damaging the gear shift. The failure mileage was 40,000. Updated 11/05/10.

I drive 2006 Ford Fusion that has about 74K and have not had any problems with until yesterday. My gear shift was stuck and would not go into park and after I had to force it to go it to park I could not leave my keys from the ignition. Now my car can not be locked and it can be knocked out of gear by just a push of a hand. I am afraid to park my call, afraid that it might roll and hurt someone. I contacted Ford and they said that I would have to bring it in and that it could cost up to $400. I have google this issue and found that over 50 Fusion owners have had the same problem. I do not have the money to get this fixed but I can't even go into a store without worrying that my car is going to roll away or someone might steal it.
