This is a well ranted problem with the Freestyle. Rusting out of the front sub-frame. It is speculated that the steel alloy is sub par and prone to rust perforation.
I had just brought my car in for an oil change and to get my winter tires on plus the usual "give it a once over". When I went back to the mechanic an hour later I was told the vehicle was done. It has a hole in the sub-frame that will not pass safety (and definitely not be safe). I was brought into the vehicle bay and looked at my car up on the hoist and there was an almost triangular hole about a 1/2" at the base by 1" tall. And yes, we talked about repairs of various kinds from outright replacement to welding on new pieces. In the end, my mechanic of the last 15 years, who has looked after this car and others before, suggested strongly moving on.
The car has been wonderful to drive with only the usual issues (brakes and front struts) and I was planning on hanging on to it longer. Sigh...
