CarComplaints.com Notes: For the third year in a row, the 3rd generation Focus is experiencing massive transmission problems.

Most notably owners keep complaining about how there's bad hesitation and jerking when starting from a stop. This isn't the result of an old, worn out part. In fact, the average mileage it's reported to us is just over 15k miles.

Clutch in transmission jerks and shudders at take-off, curious how many others have the problem.

This is actually my second vehicle from FORD I had a 2012 Ford Focus that left me stranded on the side of the road after having to have multiple recall fixes done. The transmission module finally took a dump and I was sitting on the road waiting for a tow truck. Luckily this was a time when I didn't have my daughter with me as I was on my way home from work, but I had to have someone come and sit with me b/c the area was so bad.

So we traded that car for a 2014 Ford Focus Hatchback; cute car with all the little bells and whistles you would want. However, 8 months later I am having the biggest problems with the car and the transmission. It shudders, accelerates wildly throwing my RPM's sky high, decelerates on it's own, downshifts or won't up shift properly when going from 0-30. At first it was dragging from 1st to 2nd gear and now it's working it's way into 3rd gear, plus we are hearing what sounds like metal grinding. I have an appt to get the car looked at, but when I asked if there was a fix for this I was pretty much told "no" they can put a temporary band-aid on it or change the clutch but it would have to be replaced again and again after that. I was also told well you have the 60,000 mile warranty that Ford has to fix the problem, but that doesn't help me after the 60,000 and this is only at the 10,000 mile mark that this is breaking.

I would hate to see some of the things that people are complaining about happen to me and my family. I am reading that it accelerates and won't take the brake but flies out into traffic on it's own. This is a serious problem and I think that FORD should take responsibility for it and not just keep trying to patch and fix. I don't understand if this has been going on since I owned my 2012 and now my 2014 is having issues even sooner as far as my miles go why not rebuild or get rid of the automatic-standard transmission. They owe it to us as consumers to fix this! We buy with the understanding that the cars will be safe and reliable and won't break or fall apart when we blink twice.

This really makes me mad that they are just wanting to keep fixing it until it falls to us to fix on our own b/c our warranty is no longer good. With my 2012 they extended my warranty right before my car took a crap; then sent me a recall that wasn't fixable until it actually broke and that's what it did. I can say one thing if I can get rid of this car we will not be purchasing another FORD anytime soon and i won't recommend to anybody to go with a FORD. The cars, trucks, and SUVS are not reliable vehicles for anybody to drive. Ford used to be a vehicle that was good and stood up to it's name now they couldn't build a toy car that could stand up to its name.

My car shudders on take off from lights and stop signs. I voiced to the service manager that I do not feel safe driving the vehicle but they say it won't leave you stranded, don't worry .. I drive 60 miles round trip to work 5 days a week. I want to feel safe. They will not replace the clutch due to the fact they said it's not bad enough yet . Sooooo I wait until it gets worse? This is my first Ford and my last one that's for sure. After I purchased the extended warranty at 36,000 miles they informed me that the clutch and transmission are covered for 100,000 miles due to so many issues... Of course I wasn't given that in writing anywhere. I am extremely frustrated with Ford at this point . This "wait and see" course of action is totally an accident waiting to happen!!! .. On my last visit to the dealer in Salisbury, MD I told the service manager .. "looks like we are going to become well acquainted" .Guess I'll be visiting the site a lot in the future .. No referrals from me .. that's for sure

There is a recall on the clutch. I have heard one owner is on her 2nd clutch and it is still not working correctly. My clutch was ordered. They don't have any on hand, sounds like they cannot make them fast enough! they ordered a 2015 clutch for my 2014 ford focus. I hope this works. Do you know how may drivers you irritate because you are unable to take off from a stop sign fast enough? its almost like I don't want to drive the car anymore but I have no choice. The car loves to go fast! it does not like slow!

The dealership fixed the clutch problem in September 2014. The car worked fine for about 8 months when it started doing it again. It started out where it wasn't too bad and now it is worse than before it was fixed the first time. I took my car in for an oil change in August 2015 and complained about the problem. They drove the car for about a block and said yes it needs to be replaced again.

What upsets me is this problem has been going on for at least 3 years and they keep making these cars and aren't fixing the problem. They told me it would take 6-8 weeks for the part to come in and I am still waiting. That tells me they can't keep up with the demand for these parts because all of these cars have the same problem.

I want a new car and I want to sue Ford. This really upsets me. I am afraid to pull out of an intersection that it will stall or I don't get enough power to move my car. This is unacceptable.

When reported after experiencing it for several months, Ford dealer said that Ford was extending the warranty and fixing the problem. Took the car in and they did the diagnosis and it was as expected. Parts on back order as expected (since this has been reported by many others). Day after I got the car back Dealer calls and says that my VIN is not part of the fix under warranty. Not sure how this is possible since it is exhibiting the same symptoms as the other cars. Currently problem has not been fixed since I do not think I should have to spend $1100 to fix a 2 year old car.

Will update, if something happens on this, if I don't get killed by this car not accelerating when I pull in to traffic.

I bought a 2014 Ford Focus last Dec. and I wish I would have left it in the parking lot. At first it ran well and no problems but then about 6 months later, or when I reached around 12,000 miles, it started to jerk and shudder. I took it back and they told me it was a clutch they put in this model, the reprogrammed the computer, or reset it but it is still doing it, I'm taking it back next Saturday to get them to look at it again. I love the style of the car and everything but if it's not going to run right what's the use in having it, I can't get another one because I traded my other car and owed some money on it and they added that to this car, so my payment is high. I just want them to fix it or give me another one. I don't want to be upset about it, I just want a car that runs good and I think they should make it right whatever it takes. I'm so sorry that I bought it, and wish I had help to get it fixed. I put a lot of miles on it because my job is 25 miles one way, and it scares me that it won't get fixed. I'm semi retired and was thinking that this would be my last new car I would have to buy.

Seriously, 12 weeks for a part? I am having the same transmission problems as everyone on here. With no end in sight. I called Ford customer service and they expedited the part. Low and Behold the Dealer doesn't have time to fix it for another 4 weeks. I told Ford, on a recorded line, if something happens to me or I get into an accident I am holding them completely responsible as they know that my car is dangerous to drive and they don't seem to care. I drive on expressways going 70 miles an hour and I can tell you it is not safe. I was told to go to the dealer to look at maybe purchasing a new car and guess what????? The sales person only wanted to give me HALF of what my car was purchased for 1 year ago. I called customer service back and told them they are crazy and what a waste of my time. There has to be something we can do other than complaining on here.

Any ideas anyone?

Ted Z. From Justice Il. again, and now my wife's car is having same issue with transmission that I had with mine. It shudders and vibrates and is jerking as well and only 16,636 miles. We will not buy another Focus unless Ford changes transmission completely. Also been waiting for clutch over 2 months now. Instead of doing the right thing and having a recall, Ford extended the warranty on transmission. Not much comfort when they can't deliver on parts.
