CarComplaints.com Notes: Ford changed a lot of things for its 3rd generation, just none of them were a good idea.

The transmission tends to hesitate and jerk when accelerating. The new electronically-driven power steering can fail suddenly and without warning. Even Ford's SYNC can be a headache. Actually, scratch that last one — it's always been a headache.

The transmission modular fails to shift properly. The transmission lags and shifts roughly, often jerking and grinding in 1st and 2nd gear. This makes the car extremely dangerous, especially when taking off out into traffic. I have almost been hit multiple times because of the transmission failing to shift properly. Ford has offered no solution. Ford dealership also will not take responsibility. They have turned me away multiple types denying the issue. I have been stuck paying for this lemon every month for the past 5 yrs. Come to find out Ford has a long history ignoring safety issues and ignoring recalls when needed. They should be held reasonable under their strict product liability and reimburse owners. I would NEVER purchase another Ford in my life or recommend their shady company to anyone. Time for transparency Ford!

I took the car into two different dealers and was told the trans was still learning after two years of clicking after opening the doors it finally drained the battery and had to have it replaced. Plus after driving the car for awhile or with the A/C is on it feels like the trans. is slipping. WHY DID FORD EVER PUT THIS TRANS IN THIS CAR? IT'S THE WORST.

Have had the same click click whirr sound since we bought our 2013 SE hatchback on 11/30/2012. dealer said they did not know of a problem. I went in for oil change 15000 miles and they tell me seals are leaking and needs a clutch parts backordered ? When searching about this issue I finally came across TSB 13-4-18 called the dealer back and ask them to perform and they still said they weren't aware of this problem over 8 months since TSB was issued WTF Ford! Wife loves the car but might be a money pit after warranty expires.

Focus SE Hatchback 2.0L

This is the famous "click click click whirr whirr click click" noise coming from the right side in the engine compartment. Open the driver or passenger door to get in and it starts making noise. This sound continues at 9 or 10 second intervals for somewhere between 15 and 20 times until it stops. I called the dealership. The head guy said,"Never heard of that one" and he would check on it and call me back in a few minutes...he never did call back and that was last Thursday 6/20/13. So now I have a little over 2400 miles on the car and it still does it when I go out to the garage and just open the door. Sometimes when I come back home and shut off the engine it will start up with that noise and continue for about 3 minutes.

There is a Ford TSB at: http://www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/pubs/content/~WT/~MUS~LEN/3624/tsb13-04-18.htm

and a video of it at:

I am taking to the dealer tomorrow for them to, hopefully, perform this fix (along with another problem). This all is old news it seems when I read about it on various forums regarding the 2013 Focus. But it's new to me. It's supposed to be a programming fix in the computer. My car was built November 2012. The Ford TSB say it applies to vehicles built ON OR BEFORE 3/23/2013. We'll see.

Focus SE

  • Automatic transmission
  • 4 miles

After we bought our Ford Focus and drove home with but 4 miles on the car, shut off the car, heard a clicking noise from under the hood. Drove right back to the dealer, (now 7 miles on the car). Salesman heard this noise and another man, they drove it to their service department and then back out front to us, with a Ford printout. Stating: Ford Focus vehicles equipped with the Powershift DPS6 transmission after the car doors were unlocked and prior to the engine starting for up to 3 minutes. The noise is the transmission shift motors waking up, and preparing to start up. Attempts to eliminate the noise should not be made. (copout)

So I said, that's not what we have here, but we'll keep our collective ear open for this problem.

Update from Nov 19, 2012: Now the transmission has a hard shift issue. It was not cold this morning (about 50 degrees) as I drove to the store. As I drove, it surged as if trying to shift out of gear, from low to high. Car was in drive when this happened, at a speed of about 30 MPH.
