CarComplaints.com Notes: Ford changed a lot of things for its 3rd generation, just none of them were a good idea.
The transmission tends to hesitate and jerk when accelerating. The new electronically-driven power steering can fail suddenly and without warning. Even Ford's SYNC can be a headache. Actually, scratch that last one — it's always been a headache.

This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. The contact stated that the vehicle shook and shuddered while driving. In addition, the transmission was faulty and the vehicle decelerated a few times. The vehicle was driven to crane Ford (4601 colonel glen plaza drive, little rock, ak 72210) where it was diagnosed that the power train failed and an unknown part was needed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 118,000.
Just picked up yesterday after 4th transmission visit. Car was hard shifting in low speeds and when accelerating the car will hesitate and lunge. Won't drive distance or on freeway only good for local small routes.
Bolt sheared off in the transmission while on the highway causing the car to stall out & be unable to go into any gear, gates for the gears seemed to be gone as shifter knob could move freely around. It did re-start once, just long enough to get off the highway, then immediately stopped working again. Got the bolt replaced with a Ford bolt, it sheared off again while driving downtown within 4 days, had it replaced and bolted through a 2nd time, and it sheared off yet again while merging onto the highway, 2 of the three times this happened car was above 30mph, one time I was only going about 15mph. Car is still not functional & Ford has stated thus far, their suggestion is replacing the transmission, which seems to be a temporary fix, as everyone else who I know/have looked up that's had this done only gets the vehicle working for a short period of time and then the vehicle stops working again when the bolt shears off. This seems to be a common issue for the 2012-2016 Ford Focus, though I don't know if it's just manual or both manual & automatic transmissions.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. When the contact attempted to move the gear shifter out of park, the shifter would not engage and failed to function without warning. The vehicle was towed to huntington beach Ford (18255 beach blvd, huntington beach, ca 92648, 714-842-6611) where it was diagnosed that the transmission failed. The dealer replaced the dual clutch system inside the transmission; however, the failure recurred without warning. While the contact's wife was driving 20 mph, the transmission shifted out of gear and the rpms increased. The driver attempted to depress the accelerator pedal, however, the vehicle stalled and failed to move. The vehicle began to resume normal operation and was able to be driven to the contact's residence. The vehicle was taken to the same dealer where they replaced the engine, the actuators, both clutches, the engagement bearing, and the transmission control module. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and offered an extended warranty regarding the failure. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was not included in a warranty extension. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 27,906.
Vehicle hesitates, shakes, and shudders while moving forward and stopping. It feels as though the car is driving over rumble strips. Stalled completely in an intersection.
Hesitation on acceleration and grinding sound; transmission would not go forward or back; clutch has excessive shuddering at low speed. Vehicle will not start
Transmission is overheating; light comes on while in stop and go traffic. The car shifts harshly, makes gurgling noises, hesitates and jerks. Roaring and clunking coming from engine when starting the vehicle and when vehicle is running.
Car has had transmission issues since we bought is new. We took the car in several times for hesitation, slow to catch gears when accelerating and stuttering. Replaced sensor and told us to push the gas to the floor and let it go through the gears to rest the system (do as needed). We find our selves again needing to replace transmission parts. Now they tell us if it is not fixed soon the car could slip into neutral on the highway or we could loose reverse. Not sure why we are not covered by the extended warranty. I feel that a dealer telling you the car can go into neutral on the highway is telling me that the car is unsafe.
Transmission slipping and stuttering. Car slips out of gear when driving. I have almost been hit multiple times while in motion pulling out into traffic only to have car slip out of gear and not move anymore. Car has slipped out of gear on highway many times while in motion
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. While depressing the accelerator pedal, the rpms increased; however, the vehicle did not immediately accelerate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission was faulty and needed to be replaced. The transmission was replaced, but the failure recurred shortly after. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The failure mileage was 80,000.
Car would not start would not go forward or go in reverse had in Ford dealership 16 times still had issues also car rusted in least then a year had it in dealership 4 times still having issues with transmission and rusting. Transmission sitting or moving city or highway or turning dealership was Suburban Ford on 59 road in waterford, Michigan
This car repeatedly thrusts forward at lower gears whilst in traffic and while in motion. It has been repaired twice within a 6-month time-frame for the faulty dps6 transmission. The capless gas tank is also presenting a constant issue, involving a leak of some sort that continues to reoccur. I have been in numerous situations that could have proven to be fatal as a result of the transmission responding too late: As well as thrusting at lower speeds when coming out of a stop or traffic back-up. This issues happen while in motion, or when making an attempt to go into motion.
This is a consumer protection issue, but moreover this is safety issue. I need help. This car was purchased new for my daughter to finish high school, go to college, and start her career. So I bought an extended warranty. The oil has been changed every 5K by a Ford dealer and every repair suggested has been completed. Within the first two weeks, it was obvious the car was not shifting properly, as exhibited by shuddering and failed acceleration. It also hesitates to the point that we could get hit pulling into traffic or trying to avoid being hit. The dealer offered many excuses over the next year but I finally received the remedy... "a" new clutch. Ford then called me directly to give me a deal that would help me get into another car. This was nothing more than a sales pitch to buy a Fusion, which I couldn't afford. Under Delaware law, I had a case for a lemon law complaint. But I trusted Ford. Since then, I have had repairs to the transmission, most of which provided for by my extended warranty, other times paid in part by me. Ford extended the warranty for all owners, but not for me. I should have received the same extension on top of my extended warranty. On 7/19/19, I notified dealer that the car needed service & I was still having trouble with the transmission. I referenced the tsb advising dealers to diagnose and fix any Focus with transmission problems (reported 7/12-19,2019). My dealer has diagnosed the problem and I need clutches. It will cost me $1800 which I cannot afford. I drive a 2001 vehicle so my daughter can go to college 14 hours away. She is leaving in 2 weeks. Why would Ford not honor that guidance for me" why is there no other remedy, such as a replacement transmission" because they want to sell replacement parts and labor at full cost, passing the cost of safety onto the consumer & the victims of crashes the problem will ultimately cause.
Shuddering clutch while accelerating in all driving conditions. Royal oak Ford has serviced the car for this specific issue 3 times since purchase and the clutch has been replaced but the issue returns. The last service appointment cost us $116 for royal oak Ford to tell us its the same issue and they weren't going to cover it. It would cost us $1700 to fix with no guarantee that it would actually resolve the issue. We contacted Ford headquarters and their response was 'to bad your car was built after 6-05-13 so we aren't responsible for repair'. our car was built on 6-19-13 with the same faulty transmission as the cars built re 6-5-13. After reading the free press article and contacting royal oak Ford again regarding the issue they are going to 'look' at the car again on 8-6-19. Royal oak Ford couldn't say if it would be covered but I will be letting them know I have filed this complaint. I can provide repair documents and the letter from Ford headquarters if you need them. Service dates so far are 4/15/19, 6/17/17, 10/12/15, 6/01/15.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Focus. While driving various speeds, the vehicle accelerated on its own without warning while braking. Also, the vehicle sputtered and shook while driving at a low rate of speed. Also, while accelerating from a stop, the vehicle slowly picked up speed. The contact took the vehicle to phil long Ford of denver (7887 w tufts ave, denver, co 80123, (303) 557-5913) where they initially replaced the clutch; however, the failure still persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 38,000.
My 2013 Ford Focus has a shuddering and other known shifting problems associated with the dps6 clutch issues. The detroit free press has outlined these known issues with Ford and I am experiencing them as well. These transmission issue occur when I accelerate and may also happen when I am stationary. Due to these safety issues I am not willing to travel with my kids or wife in the car. I have to drive the car as a daily driver but there is no way I am placing my family in danger by driving them in the car.
