CarComplaints.com Notes: You should probably steer clear of the 2012 Focus. Otherwise, you might not be able to steer at all.

The 2012 is the first Focus to offer Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS). It's also the first year with massive power steering failure. These things are not mutually exclusive.

And while you wait for your steering to disappear, you'll be greeted with a transmission that shudders, vibrates or won't shift at all.

I was driving home around 2:00 a.m and when suddenly the steering wheel just locked on me and the steering assist failure light turned on. i swerved to the next lane and luckily there wasn't any vehicles on the road so I pulled of to the nearest exit but it was so difficult to that because the steering assist was off. I managed to get of the freeway and stopped at a gas station. I turned off the car and turned it back hoping it will fix the issue but the car was still showing the steering assist failure. The next day i called Ford roadside assistance to have the car towed to the nearest ford dealership. I explained what happened and after two days they said it was a result of a collision. I was shocked when they said this and asked them wheres the damaged ? they said the rim was scrapped and since it has physical damaged they couldn't considered it being a defective problem. I told them i knew about the damaged to the rim but that was about six months ago when i got a flat tire i replaced the tire to the same rim and didn't have any issues with ever since no air leaked didn't pull to the side or anything. so it did not make sense to me that six months later the steering goes out. so after calling every person I could speak to nobody was able to help so it ended up being an insurance claim. so I'm very disappointed that not even a year with the car and its having issues like this where in any other circumstance it could of been a severe accident.

It was scary as hell when suddenly the power steering just went out....After re-starting the car it was back to normal.....The dealership looked for pinched wire and supposedly relocated the harness....Yeah right....It happened again 1 week later.

Not sure what they did to it but they called and said they think they fixed it...Service guy wanted to drive it for a few days....It did the same thing to him 3 times the day he drove it home....Still in the shop as of 7/09/12....They are ordering a new rack-and-pinion for steering per Ford. We'll see what happens this time....This is the 3rd attempt.
