Why hasn't Ford done a recall on the Ford Focus and this problem with the power steering. It pops up as "Steering Malfunction." I am glad that my daughter wasn't driving it when the power steering went out. After sitting awhile and turning it back on it seemed to "fix" itself. Hard to drive when it power steering did go out but my husband was pulling it in the garage. FORD WAKE UP AND DO A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM!!! Spent $1700 having it fixed at the Ford dealership...told them I know exactly what was wrong with it after researching and finding out that others were having the same problem.

This car is only four years only, low mileage, very fuel efficient! My son has been driving it for almost two years, but then a couple of months ago the power steering failed, luckily he was driving in town, so he could safely pull over after cranking the steering wheel. I was concerned, and mentioned it to the Ford dealership here in town. They mentioned that if it happened again, then I should bring the car in and have it looked at. Happened three more times after. Now I am extremely concerned, as I had a 2008 Ford Escape that this happened to as well. I booked the car in to be checked. The result...it needs a new steering rack. Not covered under warranty, and not a recall issue! The cost with parts and labour...$2700.. Now my biggest decision will be, once it gets fixed (like I have any option) do I keep the car or sell it!!!

Update from Oct 6, 2016: I emailed Ford- customer service...hoping that they would provide some sort of assistance for this issue. I was told that because my warranty expired in August 2015 there was nothing they could do!!!

Although I've put a lot of miles on my car, I didn't expect the power steering to go completely out. The power steering had a few hiccups for a couple weeks before it went out completely. I discovered that by turning the ignition off and then on again, sometimes more than once, I could get the power steering to come back on. It was too dangerous to drive or take any chances that it would go out again, so I had to get it fixed. It was no longer under warranty, so I had to borrow the money. It really put me in a bind. I never saw any warning lights come on about the problem before or during. I have seen that this problem is happening to a lot of Ford cars. Some have been recalled and some have not. I was just lucky to have one of the models that had no recall, of course. I think they should recall this part and fix it in all the cars, because it seems so common.

Initially the problem was intermittent and only happened when the car was started. The steering appeared to operate when motor started and then a Steering Assist fault was reported and power steering was shut down. My wife had to drive back from a restaurant to our hotel in a strange town the first time this occurred in 2015. However since the steering appeared to have been turned off by the computer I checked the next morning and everything was fine.

This happened intermittently with slowly shortening intervals over the next 6 months. It would always be fine if the ignition was turned off and then back on. Later it started happening while driving but it could still be reset by turning the ignition off at a stoplight. This all sounds like some sort of connection problem between the processor and the steering sensors. However since it was intermittent I could see that a mechanic might not be able to find the problem.

Finally the steering assist no longer works at all. I took it to the dealership and they said they had no idea what was wrong with it since they had never seen this problem before. 4 days later they tell me they can fix it for around $1700. This does not seem to normal wear and tear. I would say it was a design problem or an assembly error at Ford. The car is extremely difficult to drive in this condition and somewhat hazardous since it would be impossible to suddenly change directions to avoid an accident or road debris.

Power Steering Failure, causing the car to loose power steering while the car was in motion on a highway (in the left hand lane) going 65 mph. It nearly caused a major accident but I was able to get to the side of the road through sheer brute strength. The problem was intermittent and was initially resolved by restarting the car. However, a week after the problem first started (and less than 50 driving miles later), the car completely lost all power steering. This all started about a month after I took the car in for service for a transmission recall update.

According the Ford Dealership, a gear had broken in the steering rack resulting in the failure. When discussing the issue with a mechanic at a different shop, he said that type of damage typically is the result of significant crash force. The car had not been in an accident. Barring an accident, the mechanic said that it was more likely the result of a defective part or component. The dealership quoted me $1,800 + tax to replace the gear box/rack.

This is the only car for my family. I do not have an extra $2,000 laying around for auto repairs of this nature, especially after having to rent a car for two weeks while waiting on the Transmission fix for this vehicle not even three months ago. I can't sell the car in this condition and now I am stuck without transportation to/from work.

Went and started cat up and warning light went on and power steering would not work in 2014. Being a single dad had no money to get a tow. I pay rent and car payment just to get by. Googled the problem and found out many people have this same problem. So I drove strait to the dealership about two miles away. Felt like I was driving a old car with no power steering. It just happen that I was going in anyways in two days I had set up for my shuttering recall transmission to get fixed. After inspection I was told my power steering gear was out and would cost me $1,300 to fix.

And told me they would not fix my transmission tell my power steering gear could be fixed first. What gets me is when I bought this car I was very excited and take excellent care of my car. I was never expecting I would have to pay $1,300 on a fix when I feel the car was still new. I still am driving around with no power steering and feel unsafe but I can not afford to fix it. I will never buy a Ford again. I feel they knew about this problem and now our fighting in court not to fix the problem. 1300 dollars for a fix on a new car....no way. I am waiting for a recall so I can get it fixed. I'm worried my car is almost at 100,000 miles and they will not fix it because of the mileage. As I am driving down the road and am getting ready to make a left turn the power steering assist malfunction light comes on and I have no power steering!! No warning prior to this happening and I almost hit a car head on because of this. And there is no recall on this issue after all of the complaints. Why not??? Ford recalls most of the 2012 vehicles including the Fusion and Flex yet they don't recall the Focus?? Makes absolutely no sense at all. I had absolutely NO warning at all that this was going to malfunction.

I had the same problem when the TCM malfunctioned without warning although that was replaced since it had a recall but still having issues with it. I am afraid to find out how much it is going to cost me to fix this steering issue since I no longer have a warranty on it. Ford really needs to do something about this because I almost had a head on collision because of this!!!! Warning would have been nice instead of a warning and failure of the power assist at the same time!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was driving home with my children and the alert light came on to say there was a steering problem then all of a sudden the car decided it wanted to steer itself into oncoming traffic. I could move the steering wheel so I slammed on the brakes and put car in reverse to get into the median before getting hit. My girls were screaming and crying. After cars passed I had to slam the steering wheel in order to pop it and drive like I was in mario cart to get home. This is ridiculous that this is not a recall when it is clearly a mechanical issue with this piece of crap car.

Just got done having a safety recall done on our Ford Focus hatchback. Had to take it back several weeks later for a new clutch. Thank goodness this was covered under our extended warranty. Had the Focus back 2 days and the power steering went out. $1700.00 later. Not under warranty. No safety recalls. Thank god my husband wasn't driving down the interstate to work when this happened. Saving our receipt from the Ford dealership in hopes that when they finally do recall the power steering problem, that they reimburse us our money.

Went to back out of my driveway, and the steering wheel was in a locked position. Could not turn right or left. When tow driver came, he checked and there was power steering fluid. He got it out of the lock position to get it on the tow truck. Was told by Ford dealership that I needed a Gear ASY - STE. The part was over $900 and then installation. On a 2012 Ford, you wouldn't expect that this would happen. There is only 51K miles on it. Plus I needed brakes. This is an expensive fix and I'm concerned that this might be a problem with other 2012 Ford Focus models. It would have been extremely dangerous if this lock had occurred when I was driving. I'm hoping that Ford does the right thing and do a possible recall and reimburse people for this fix.
