The 2012 is the first Focus to offer Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS). It's also the first year with massive power steering failure. These things are not mutually exclusive.
A year after having this problem fixed, it happened again. Very frustrating. I couldn't even open the trunk manually. Then the next morning, miraculously it worked as if nothing ever happened, but the trunk light is still out, and the license plate light flickered on and off as the trunk was opened and closed... obviously there's still a short somewhere.
