Honestly, this car was great to me and my family. It did us a good deal of service between about 2013 and 2020. For those 7 years, it racked up over 300,000 miles, drove through multiple road trips, and the first problems only happened in 2018. That was when the A/C failed. But, even though the car got incredibly hot during the summer, we still drove it though, mostly because we couldn't afford to pay the quoted $2000 to fix it. After that, it had it's fair share of issues, but they were all well past 200k miles, which was way farther than any of us expected it to last. There were some times where it failed to start in the parking lot or stuttered a bit before accelerating, but it was a really good car.
But then, when we decided to move out of the DC area to Nebraska, my parents simply decided that it was too risky to take our (now somewhat unreliable) Ford Focus SE through the summer of 2020. And that's when we purchased a used 2019 Kia Sorento LX V6 AWD.
That turned out to be perfect timing, as the starter slowly started failing in the 2 weeks prior to picking up the KIA.
One, two, three, four, five, six times it remained silent and still. Then, we heard the good ol' inline 4 roar to life. The last time we drove it, which was also the day the KIA was to be picked up from an enterprise car sales dealer a few miles away, we had to try 20 TIMES for the engine to turn over. But even after all that pain, the few summers without any A/C, having to take shoddy school buses because the engine kept breaking, and even more... there's still a soft spot In my heart for that little old car. It earned its retirement. We donated it to Kars4Kids, and it's fate is unknown. But wherever it is, I still do a little double-take when I see an old Ford Focus on the highway.
