CarComplaints.com Notes: Even though the first model year of a major redesign should typically be avoided, Ford did a good job & the 2008 Ford Focus doesn't appear to have any major defects.
That said, the following model years of this 2nd generation Focus (2009-2011) do appear to be slightly better.

Well it started in December 2008. I started having problems getting my car into gear. Biggest problem was downshifting into 4th and 3rd. Took it to the Dealer Ship, they said the shifter cables needed adjusting, so they did that. I still had problems. The next step was to put a new shifter and shifter cables in. Problem not solved.
They finally rebuilt the transmission replace everything in side. Still not solved.
So the rebuilt again, and did more adjusting. Still not fixed. So the replace the transmission with a new one. Not done there.
I finally took it back again and they had to replace my clutch, pressure plate and, flywheel. All were over heated and warped..
The cause of all of this is still unknown...
