This is apparently one of many of these ford idler pulley problems. Yes, the bolt broke. It was replaced and broke again 3 months later...I not aware of a more permanent fix.
I own a 07 Ford Focus LS and I only have about 38,631 miles on it. I did not notice the noise until my friend heard it and mentioned it to me. So, my dad got under it with the belt tool to loosen the belt tension and said there was some play with the smooth idler pulley. When I start it you can heard the noise. Its not squealing, more like a deep growl. Everyone is telling me that the pulley should not be going out on this car this early. So now with the pulley not being as expensive that I thought it would be, I'm going to buy it and my dad and husband will be installing a new one. Yeah, they're having to slowly lift my engine out and replace it. This will be ruining my 4th of July plans to go down to the coast so now Im going to have to wait. Grrr....
Update from Nov 15, 2010: Well figured out why there was rattling as I idled and accelerated. My waterpump was causing the noise. Luckily I still have my powertrain warranty so it wont cost me a cent.
