This awful smell really concerned me. I have infant twins in the back where the smell was the worst. The dealer told me there was nothing wrong and that they could smell anything. after having it for 9 days and could not repair, I decided to take it to another dealer who in 20 minutes told me that it is the coating on the exhaust system plus I had spider webs and field grass all along the exhaust system.
Removing the grass and web helped some, but the smell was still there. I was told that it would eventually burn off. I read an article online by Robert Farago under the top 10 worst cars. he noted in the article that the car comes with an unpleasant graunching noise (and burning brake smell) whenever you beat the Focus' rear drums.
The fix to the problem was replaced by another Ford Focus, as this one comes with multiple problems to be listed.
