Around 95,000 miles my power steering pump started making noise. As the miles added on, the noise got worse and worse, and the functionality of the pump got less and less. Eventually it started getting to the point that it would only slightly work while turning right and going over like 20mph. I can't even begin to tell you how awful it was driving stick with no power steering, trying to turn around or something.
When it hit over 100k, money got to the point where getting another pump was reasonable, so we went ahead and ordered one. I replaced it in a few hours in my buddies driveway. It didn't work right away and I was PISSED, but when I went to school another friend had told me to lift the car on the car lift and "burp" the system, by when its weight was supported, to take the PS pump cap off and slowly move the wheels from lock to lock and it should let all the air out of the system. It indeed worked!
However, the thing that annoys me mos about this issue, is we bought this car brand new from the dealer in April of 2006, and it had like 80 miles on it or something. This car had never had any steering work done to it, and when I pulled the factory pump off, it was a FoMoCo pump, but it had a giant shiny REMAN tag on it... Way to go Ford, using REMAN parts on new vehicles...
