This car has a tendency to shutdown when driving, often at speed. Once, traveling 65+ mph on a highway, it just started to lose power, and shut down completely on the exit ramp. At this point, when trying to restart it, it would crank, but not catch. This happens at random, but has been doing so more frequently recently (2-3x in the last month). Had it towed to a reputable mechanic in Longmont, CO, but after 2 days of diagnostics, they couldn't get it to fail. We've since found that if we wait for a while (20-30 mins), it might start up again. (Twice, when I've had it towed to mechanics' shops after hours, it's started up just fine the next day, and they couldn't figure anything out...)

I have another mechanic who does work on another car of mine, and he guessed that it might be the fuel pump overheating and occasionally crapping out. He wanted to put a fuel pump gauge on it and let it run until it failed, but didn't have the right attachment and therefore couldn't do it. I have another friend who owns a garage in Boulder, CO who is willing to put a fuel pump gauge on it and drive it home (~30mi) to see if it will fail. Both guys think it is probably the fuel pump, but want to make sure it is before I invest $600-$900 replacing it... It's my daughter's car, and she doesn't have that kind of money to spare (nor do I...).

Anyone have similar experience? Any thoughts? At this point, we're in a quandary, and as an overprotective dad, I'm really worried about my daughter driving this before we get the problem resolved.

Thanks!
