THIS STARTED WITH A 2000 FORD FOCUS WITH 120K ON IT. ONE DAY THE ENGINE, WHICH HAD BEEN RUNNING GREAT JUST SELF DESTRUCTED. IT TURNED OUR THAT THE #1 PISTON SHATTERED. WE NEVER KNEW WHY. WE REPLACED IT WITH A 60K USED ENGINE.
30K MILES LATER. THIS ENGINE SELF DESTRUCTED. THE VERDICT: THE SAME #1 PISTON SHATTERED. WHEN I SAY THIS I MEAN IT WAS A PILE OF ALUMINUM GRAVEL IN THE BOTTOM OF THE OIL PAN.
WE WERE OFFERED BY OUR DEALER A 2005 FORD FOCUS AT AN EXCELLENT PRICE, SO (AGAINST BETTER JUDGMENT ONE MIGHT SAY) BELIEVING THAT FORD MUST HAVE WORKED THE KINKS OUT OF ITS ENGINE, WE BOUGHT IT.
AT JUST SHY OF 90K MILES, MY HUSBAND TRIED TO DETERMINE WHEN TO REPLACE THE TIMING CHAIN. THERE ARE NO SPECIFICATIONS FOR THIS MAINTENANCE ANYWHERE THAT WE COULD FIND. WE DECIDED TO DO IT. AFTER THE ENGINE WAS OPENED, WE FOUND IT DIDN'T NEED REPLACING. HOWEVER, WHILE CHANGING MY SPARK PLUGS MY MECHANIC FOUND THAT THE #1 SPARK PLUG LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE HAD POUNDED IT ON AN ANVIL. THE #1 PISTON HAD BEEN SLAMMING IT.
IT TURNS OUT THAT THE VALVE SEAT HAD WORKED ITS WAY THROUGH THE CYLINDER AND BEEN POUNDED INTO THE HEAD.
COMPLAINING TO THE DEALER, THE RESPONSE WAS "WOW" WHAT A COINCIDENCE. YOU MUST HAVE SOME BAD LUCK.
NOW COME ON. THREE FOCUS ENGINES. TWO BLOWING UP PISTON # 1 AND THE THIRD GETTING READY TO DO THE SAME. THIS CAN'T BE LIMITED TO JUST MY EXPERIENCE.
