This data is from the NHTSA — the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints are spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem.
So how do you find out what problems are occurring? For this NHTSA complaint data, the only way is to read through the comments below. Any duplicates or errors? It's not us.
I owe a 2000 Ford Focus SE(wagon ) and have incurred a problem with the trunk latch and drivers side door latch. Have been instructed that my vehicle was not covered under the recall due to VIN even though the problem was the same as mentioned in the recall. Also, vehicle was not covered under my extended warranty because it was not an electrical problem. I am suppose to be responsible for the $456 repair for the driver's door latch, and $148 for trunk latch repairs. I have owned the car for 1 year, this was the 4th Ford, and the last I will ever purchase. My complaint stated that if there was a recall on a part it should be replaced at dealer's expense. I should not be required to pay for a problem I did not cause. I take very good care of my vehicles and should not have to suffer.
1st recall,6/2000 shop for A/C problem,9/2000 shop for 7 days for ac problem,1/2002 shop 7days for engine work, recalls X 4 or 5 not sure about dates there has been so many on this car, problems with not starting, gas gauge, tire replacement 3 sets in less then 3 years, hesitation, poor gas milage, brakes squealing, trunk does not close properly,10/2003 has been in shop for 3 weeks for possible engine work. Dealer can not seem to find or repair the problem, I am not happy with this car it has had serious problems from day one there are more to mention can not list them all I need help.
These problems have all happened at different times and seem to be completely unrelated. The rotors had to be replaced with the brakes at approximately 13K miles. The engine just went into idle while I was driving. This happened three separate times, but when I took it in to the dealer. They didn't see anything wrong with it and couldn't duplicate the malfunction. My rear wheels started making a very low noise around 8/15/02. After an accident at the end of August. The noise was much worse and the rear bearings were replaced by the shop that fixed my car after the accident. South Florida is a "high-salt/corrosion" area because of our proximity to the sea. This was never introduced before. When the cigarette lighter is pushed in, it does not merely pop out when it is hot. It ejects and is thrown on the floor. Having it land on my leg twice and my carpet scorched by it twice, it could have cause a serious accident. Thank you for your assistance.
Truck lid will not stay closed. After dealer repair, would not open. Electrical system failed. Auto door locks do not lock. Currently electrical locks will not work. Pat milliken Ford states rear passenger door is shorting system out.

When slippery out, the brakes will not grasp properly. Therefore, the vehicle will slide. Dealer can not duplicate problem. Consumer also experienced these difficulties as followed, power steering system (exploded, w/3-4 week repairs), trunk lock was broken, keyless entry system works improperly, the trunk lock has been replaced twice, the radio has been replaced 3 times & still occurs, the winshield arm recently broke, and concludes that the vehicle also slides in dry weather. Consumer adds that she had filed a complaint w/ board of Ford, the case was lost after recieving a loaner car (due to taking vehicle in for repairs) and says that she cannot afford to buy out the lease (will have to wait until Oct 2002)
Transmission needed to be replaced at 7000 miles. At 25000 miles the car is having the same problems- hesitation, whining noises, and hard shifting. The trunk door must be slammed as hard as possible several times before it closes. Also a passenger compartment water leak had to be repaired four times before it was fixed.
Several structure repairs have been made, rear trunk was aligned due to consumer having difficulty closing, left rear handle at headliner was loose and broken, and the exterior driver door moulding fell off.
We drove off the lot without having the pdi performed on the car, whcich resulted in low fluids in the vechicle, especially the transmission fluid. The low fluid caused the transmission to slip, and revved the engine, which made the car ride and drive real hard. The 1st day we had problems with the battery, which was already dead in the car. And now we received on Dec 12,1999 a letter stating that the car was recalled because it had problems with fluids leaking into the cruise control panel, and to contact the dealer as soon as possible. So we contacted the dealer and let them know of the recall, and ask when it was possible to bring the car in. We spoke with the service manager who stated to us that the parts were orderd for Georgia locations, but none of the parts ever had reach their location.. now that leaves us a problem as of today Dec 18,1999, with constantly calling to find out when the part would be available and not only that the car needs to be seen also for the blown lighter fuse, as well as the ignition signal failure needs to be serviced also. We need immediate attention to this matter because the holidays are coming and we cannot use our car the way it suppose to be used, if we are trying to drive it out of town, please help us in this tough situation, because no one else is trying to understand that when a car is purchased brand new, it should not have these many problems with it in this short period of ownerhip, thank you.
